View Full Version : Why I hate Blockbuster

Recently, I tried to apply for a job at Blockbuster, and they told me I was too young to work there. I am seventeen, which is old enough to rent an R-rated movie, and Blockbuster won't let me sell R-rated movies to other people. And they have also raised their prices and brought back late fees (although they try not to call it that) This is why I now use Netflix and will never go back.

You have to be 18 because of the restraint the government puts on the company. Because of your age you are a minor in the government's eyes. Therefore you are in a different tax bracket and different tax regulations that will not conform to blockuster's mainstream agenda. Because of your age you can not work certain hours that a blockbuster store is in operation by law. You also do not conform the the hours and break time limits. Another reason by law you get an hour break per 8 hours not a half hour and you get 2 half hour paid breaks not 15. You also must present school documents to the employer and by law they have to verify your in school. Also they can not run a background check on you without your legal guardians authorizations because your a minor.

but thanks for playing!

When the company started taking trades, that is when we stopped hiring minors. Because by law a minor can't accept trades. I know someone who was hired at 17, but that was before the company started taking trades.
Maybe we could just stop taking trades. No one trades anything in anyways.
This explanation of why we don't hire minors came from my DM. I thought it was for reasons about 17 yr olds having hour restrictions. I was corrected.

Most other video stores CAN'T hire under 18 because THEY CARRY PORN. I suggest the op either wait the year and try again or look into other places hiring.
As for the prices, they rise as other costs do. It's all a part of business.

17 yearolds can work 40 hours a week but can not work all 7 days out of the week only 5 or 6. Also if we ever had enouph hours 17 year Olds can not work over 40 hours a week

I think we are all missing the bigger picture in all of this...
... why would someone who is aware of this board (and presumably has read some of the posts) want to work at Blockbuster?

Am I the only one that missed the leap of logic involved with "I want a job there, I didn't get it, therefore fees are outlandish and Blockbuster sucks"? I mean, you don't have to be a prospective employee to notice, but I'm not seeing how the dots connect. You hate late fees because you didn't get a job there?
As an aside, you're 17 if I gather correctly. You can't even start your own account, why are you worried about late fees?

he can not get an account because he can not legally contract. You must be 18 to legally contract. You can be employeed and have an account per se but you wouldn't be able to rent out anything totally 100 dollars if it autocharged or a Video Game. If you were an employee you must have an account so they age is waived, it is part of the employement procedure.

I know all of that, but someone who hasn't, and is trying to get a job there, does not. So, knowing he's not getting hired, he can't get an account. Therefore, he can't accrue his own late fees. Therefore, isn't it a tad... dumb to say, and I quote, this?
and brought back late fees (although they try not to call it that) This is why I now use Netflix and will never go back.
Or do you use Netflix because you're not old enough for a Blockbuster membership? C'mon, man, that's like claiming to be a stoner when you're too scared to even smoke cigarettes.

Not in California...
Under 18 can work up to 20 hours per week...no more than 4 hours per day Mon-Thurs (Fri-Sun can work up to 8 hours.)
(Also, Mon-Thurs, they cannot work past 10:00pm)
p.s. We are ALL missing the the most important aspect of her wanting to work at BB...
And that question is... "Is she hot"?
Or even more important..."Is she hot...AND ASIAN??!!" .. OH HELL NO!!! Dude I would hire her in a motherfuckin[' HEARTBEAT!!!

In California a minor who has graduated from high school can legally work full-time, and does not need a work permit. I had been renting movies from Blockbuster with my mom's card for years, until they raised their rates and brought back late fees, which caused us to switch to Netflix. What bothered me more than that I couldn't work at Blockbuster is that treated me like a fucking CHILD

With an attitude like yours ask yourself this question ------> Why would they want to hire you?
I hear NetFlix is hiring. You just have to sit in a MAILBOX and sort their mail.

Your fucking stupid the U.S. post office sorts the mail for Netflix. That is a job that pays 2x as much as a store manager.

 Blockbuster Still thinks it's the 90s, where they are the only ones in the movie rental business! They try and sell every piece of junk under the sun, then cant figure out why they are going out of business. Their online is a joke, coming out 2 years behind Netflix! They were at one time the leaders in the movie rental biz. Now in 2010 they are followers. As a former employee of the Union Lake store they pushed us to sell Candy Bundles.........CANDY BUNDLES , give me a break, Blockbuster goes out of their way to push everything down your throat except for ? Movies........the reason why they are in business. Until they realize that if You don't have an On-line Community You will go out of business. Right now Michigan doesn't need any more ppl standing in the unemployment line. It's been over a year since I quit and I didnt want to go down with the ship! LOL. :p

I was in the cash office. before that customer service, before that lumber department. (they yanked me from lumber as soon as I told them I was pregnant.)
I really liked Lowe's a lot. Why I left had nothing to do with Lowe's. My daughter's father and I both worked there. And when our relationship ended, it got ugly at work. So I quit. 2 weeks later I started at BBV.
Lowe's is a great company to work for. I actually wish I had never left. They do the employee ownership, stock options. (even for cashiers) health insurance, vacation, actual full time hours. But it's retail. so same bullshit applies.
