I rented a movie tonight without noticing that it was rated R. When i got home my wife flipped out because a friend of her's just told her how vulgar and crude that movie was ... and she wanted me to take it back. So i did. When i got to the store i immediately found a clierk and asked him if i could return this movie. He asked me if there was anything wrong with it, i said no and told him why i wanted to exchange it. He said he couldn't exchange it for that reason, but only if it was defective and only for the same title. He said it was "Blockbuster's Policy". I said "ok, show me that policy. i want to see where it says that". He said "ok" then asked his manager who was standing near by ... "doesn't Blockbuster have a policy that says we can't exchange a movie for something else due to content". She of course said yes. But i said you've got to be kidding me. Anyway, i said told her i was just there 15 minutes ago and there was no way i could have watched the movie ... bla bla. We went back and forth, then finally she said "ok this time, and this time only i will let you do it".
So i just have a question to those that have worked for this place ... if it exists, does anyone have a copy of this "policy" they can send to me?
Thanks!

If you were a new member I would have exchanged it, informing you that you need to read the ratings and descriptions. Commented the account that you now understand the policy, and not to rent anything over PG13. Pay attention to what you are renting! Don't get on our case for your mistakes.

Yeah, I would have looked at your history (to see if things like this have happened before). First time mistake, I'd have done an exchange, told you about the policy (which is we do NOT do exchanges for content) and noted the account. I understand mistakes happen, fuck, we're human.
We had a guy rent Havoc and bring it back because he didn't know it was about sex and gangs. Duh, says it on the back. Gave him an exchange and noted the account. He'll be checking the back for sure from now on.

if you don't want to rent movies with any kind of violence/sex/drugs....blah blah blah, the next time you go in, have them change your account from non restricted to restricted. this prompts us to let you know you are renting something over a pg-13 or T rated game. It is not our job to judge the content of the film you are renting, nor is it our responsibility to suffer the loss in revenue because you were unhappy with the content of your rental. The only way we return rentals is if it is defective or it has the wrong disc inside the case, and even then, we only return for the same movie. if it is not in stock, we leave a credit on the account. This is a blockbuster policy that is in our standard operating procedures. If you have a problem with the store, please remember that we DO NOT write policy, we just enforce it. That is our JOB. Now it sounds like you were taken care of, but dont hastle the store employees for just doing thier jobs, ask to speak to the DL or go on line to Blockbuster.com and complain that way. The people at the store level dont control things like that.
oh, and PS, the movie ratings are on the case as well as reasons for thier ratings, IE Rated R for pervasive language and strong sexual content.......

also, we don't hand out our standard operating procedures to customers, duh. look for the information station the next time you are in, that lists all that you need to know.

If your wife doesnt want an R rated movie, then its YOUR responsibility to ensure you check the clearly marked box doesnt display an R certificate before you check it out.
Tonight you made a mistake and asked the csr if you could return it and choose another one instead. As far as the csr is concerned it is company policy not to allow this just on a customers whim. If the customer disputes the decision because they feel they have a valid reason, then it is passed to a manager who may or may not allow it based on the individual circumstances.
In your case, your request was granted.
Since it was YOU who made the mistake, and the outcome was what YOU wanted, I am puzzled as to why you are asking for a written copy of this policy, and cant help wondering what you intend to do with it ?

this is right up there with people who want credits because a movie was subtitled.
read the box, look at the ratings, and if your wife has something to say about everything you do, send her in for the damn movies.

You don't know that this customer was being a dick, and I don't think this was an unreasonable request. Yes it is policy, but as most people stated, take care of it this one time and next time he is out of luck. Your response to this person is completely immature and rather pointless. Some people actually watch movies for a story and content, not how many times the writer can put the words fuck, shit and pussy into their movie. Why don't you grow up and go back to whacking off yourself. It is obvious you aren't getting any.

not only did the manager on duty do the right thing by giving you the benefit of the doubt once and explaining the policy to you, you can rest assured that the minute you left, the conversation that's going on in this thread happened among the employees in the store as well.
the only time i'd issue a credit and an apology is if i got a "my 16 year old rented this R rated movie and our account is restricted" type of complaint.
in that case it would be the employees duty to ID the person renting. restricted account or not though, we don't have to warn anyone about what they're renting as long as they're over 17.
As a grown man, one would imagine you'd take responsibility for what you're renting. does your wife wipe your ass for you too?

I think before we had to keep credits below a certain % this would have been less of an issue. I had to deal with several customers like this last night. When the husband picks up a movie that the wife doesn't want, its like, I have to do a credit because of the lack of communication in your marraige? I am so frustrated when we have to void off an enitre transaction because they forgot their CC or just realized they didn't have enough $$ and it counts against me.

Well whoever said policy had to be written down anyway? It's my personal policy always to fling boogers northward after i pick them, but i don't have that written down anywhere. a better example: it's blockbusters policy to help customers in line in the order they arrive in line, but that's not written down.
even if it is written down, it's blockbuster's private info - blockbuster being an entity protected under search & seizure laws just like you are.
you asked, policy was cited to you two or three times. employees know, it's our job. we know our shit. it's a lot easier for us to acquiesce whenever a custoemr needs an exchange (two scans and yields a grateful customer). but we're paid to uphold policy, i'm afraid.
don't you wish sometimes you could go faster than the speed limit which might seem inane on some roads? well you are constrained by authorities dictating their laws, and you live with it. so are we, but we do out best to accommodate individual situations because we're also nice, normal people (except me).

This is true because some customers..... not all, but some customers will see this as a loophole that they can exploit when they feel like it. It is a pattern that my store has had to break some people out of. Same title.... no exceptions.

oh that's easy. It was a problem before, but now I wear a t-shirt that enumerates the common daily things I need to remember, and I can just reference the list when I'm idle. I think breathe is the third or fourth item on the list (right after "remember to blink to lubricate your eyes, rk" and before "is your stomach growling? you can fix that by eating food."

Urban Cowboy, I agree with your comments. I would like to also say there are titles like Aristocrats that have YRV only on them, which should be NC17.
And what is the problem in offering customer service? Not every customer is out to take advantage of the system. In any situation, put yourself as the customer in front of you, how would you want to be treated?

sometimes its just good customer service to understand the customer made a mistake or was in a hurry.. I have done it too.. Im not saying everyone should get exchanged for different movies.. And i REFUSE! to give different movie exchanges for defective movies.. or prps.. or if they dont come back the same day
but if they come back within an hour of the time they rented it, or if they call and are sincire, most of the time i let them go and just notate their account because like you said, not everyone is out to take advantage of the system and if this guy is not out to do that i would like to give him good customer service for the fact that he is one of the few honest customers out there.. and if he is out to take advantage, well then theres a note on the account and he wont get to do it again....

I always look at the rating on movies I rent and if I see its rated G or PG I put it down. I love R rated movies....sometimes PG13 is too weak for me. I like realistic movies, not ones where people say, "I'm gonna kick your butt".
I will be telling all of my employees to let every customer that is renting "Aristocrats" know that the content is very vulgar and that they are being warned and cannot ask for a credit/refund if they don't like it. I did the same thing sorta for "Kinsey" because most customers had no idea what it was about, but I did get a few people come back and say they were offended by it but I told them they had been warned. There was another movie that I had to do the same thing with as well.

At my store, we have a customer that doesn't like rated R movies, so after the first time they accidently rented an R movie, we allowed them to exchange it. Then we put the restriction on the account, and a wrn to tell the customer if they are renting a rated R movie. Haven't had a problem with that customer since. If I customer comes back with in five hours of renting a movie/game and says that it is to violent/bad language I allow them to exchange it for something else in the store. However, if the game was to easy, or they didn't like the movie - tough.

I had this same situation when some guy rented "Garden State". He came back in later and said, "Yea, I knew it was rated 'R' but I didn't know that it would have the word 'fuck' spoken every other word".
I tried not to make him feel like too much of an idiot but I replied with, "Well sir, RIGHT under the rating it explains why it has been rated 'R'." And then I proceeded to point out the warning of EXCESSIVE VULGAR LANGUAGE.
But ya, I agree with the majority of you. Let 'em by once and then warn them about it for next time.

It pisses me off when people complain about our softcores on the NR wall, so when someone complains about 18s being there too, I really get annoyed. It's just a box, FFS. They don't and are not allowed to have anything unsuitable on them. What the hell is a box gonna do to some kid? I worry about these parents who are merely teaching their kids to be arseholes.

Have had that problem before, they are just a few and they always come back. I worry about what the parents are not teaching their kids. NOTHING! I work in an urban store, and when parents come in with kids, even toddlers, its like, gohead and run around they don't care. I often get in trouble when I confront them to watch their kids.

Whatever the policy is not really the point here and i think you know that.
Personally i would have let you choose something else but at the same time make it VERY clear to READ THE BOX!!,also the description of the movie and the rating on the box but the real problem here seems to be that you don't know your wife very well. if all else fails i suggest perhaps a threesome with your wife and her prudish friend and maybe if she loosens up a bit she might let you cum in her face.
Best tip i can give really, any bbv employee would have happily suggested the same if you had asked them in store at the time and you would have avoided this whole mess.

Usually I finish reading a thread before chiming in with ABOB TEFF'S RANDOM PAGE 3 THOUGHTS, but I have to stop this bus right here . . .
I loved "Aristocrats" and the fact that a movie like that can be made in this country, but as for the rating (or lack of) . . . that is an issue with the MPAA, not ANY video store or its employees. I am in wholehearted agreement with you that the MPAA is a bunch of whores with absolutely no applicable set of standards. Now the fact that Blockbuster is so damn dumb that things like "Seinfeld" and "Scrubs" are also slapped with the YRV stickers is another story . . .

OKay, that post out of the way, I have finished reading and now bring you ABOB TEFF'S RANDOM PAGE 3 THOUGHTS!!!!
*First off, most of you are right. Do the exchange, make a big deal out of how you aren't supposed to do it but you will this ONE time. Then talk about him when he leaves.
*Next, pardon my language, GROW A FUCKING PAIR! Or at least take them out of your wife's purse. Jesus . . .
*About time! Wendy's has put the Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger back on the 99 cent menu! (Hey, these are random thoughts!)
*Would you go into a restaurant and order a hamburger, then call the waiter over and throw a hissy-fit because it contained BEEF!? NO! Would you go buy a motorcycle and then try to return it because it ONLY HAS TWO WHEELS?! NO! So I fail to see how it is our fault because you rented the movie THAT YOU PICKED OUT!
*Don't forget to vote. It is your civic duty. And you have no right to bitch if you don't.
*I am not paid to be a babysitter nor the Thought Police. Take some responsibilty for your own decisions.

I have what I believe to be a legitimate question.
Here are two things I've observed:
1. New user joins board, makes a post about stupid shit that's been posted about before, gets flamed for not researching board to find previously existing thread on that topic.
2. New user joins board, finds a previously existing thread on a topic for which they have some stupid shit to post, replies to thread, gets flamed for digging up old thread.
So, what are new members REALLY supposed to do when they have something they want to post about?
It's the same people flaming each time, which is beyond contradictory. "RESEARCH! ...but don't post in old threads."

Because no one likes repeating themselves. Also, you'll notice that the only people (even if it's MOST of them) who get flamed for digging up old topics are the ones that bring it back with an inane, thoughtless reply. And if you think a reply that has the word "peeps" in it is anywhere near intelligent, then I can promise you that you wont last long here.
Again, bringing up a dead topic with a great, thought-out reply is less likely to get you flamed. Hell, it might even spark new interest in that particular thread itself. But bringing up a topic and saying what seems like a really long run-on sentence...well, that just leads to what happened here, which leads to yet another n00b saying O YA WELL FCK ALL U NEWAYZ CUZ I GOT ANEW JOB MAKING LIKE TEN TIMEZ AS MUCH N SHIT FCKN LO LIVEZ NERD MOTHA FUCKA PEACE OUT LOLOLJK.

...huh?!ahhhh yes, the obligatory why do all n00bs get flamed on this site, no matter what they post. To quote Justin Timberlake (sry, but he's my hero for being the first one to tap Britney) Cry me a river. Not every n00b gets flamed. I didn't and as far as I can remember, Bran didn't. This post by the n00b had no redeeming qualities whatsoever. It did not add to the already dead thread in any shape or form.
Lastly, I will point out the commonality of your two examples. Please note the part in each one highlighted in bold. Do you now see the fucking problem? DON'T POST STUPID SHIT.
Also, quit posting the "why do all n00bs get flamed no matter what they post" post. It's just as annoying as the shit they post and make you look like a damn fool.

Just about everything that's posted here is stupid shit.
You do have a point there. But there are degrees of stupidity (and degrees of shittiness) and can you honestly say that......
Why is it that peeps think we as employees are so stupid .....We wasn't born yesterday.....as Mr. Pussy Whipped or it wouldn't play......And now for the rest of the story:eek:
deserves ANY type of respect??
In addition to his grammatical errors (the most glaring is his use of peeps.... if he wants to sound like an idiot, isn't even more insulting to him if we don't TREAT him as such??), I count at least two factual errors:
1 - BBI as a matter of fact does NOT pay their bills (hence the Universal pissing contest from last year)
2 - If you are going to act like a smart arse and quote Paul Harvey, at least get the quote right.
And I'm not even going to bother with his second post.... already been addressed.
Now, you mentioned that you didn't get flamed for your first post. Brandon didn't get flamed... there are quite a few others that didn't..... but since you specifically didn't get flamed, ask yourself.... what did someone that did get flamed do or not do differently from your first post.
And, yes, you can even say that TED, Koi and Johnlow post stupid shit all of the time.... the difference is, I do believe they ALL did get flamed in the beginning (I remember TED's arrival here and it taking quite some time for him to grow on you), and they lived thru it (as did RK and some others)..... those three, tho, do it for comic relief, and I feel comfortable saying that all three are HIGHLY more intelligent than they act on here....... I can't say the same for the n00bs because all we can go by is the big festering pile of crap they drop here as ther calling cards.

I've just noticed some instances in my time here where both new people who don't research and new people who do get the same level of treatment, regardless of the content of their posts.
A specific example of this would be Erythro42's post on this thread (http://www.ihateblockbuster.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4098&page=2). His/her question was relevent to the topic, even though the thread was a year old.

Well whoever said policy had to be written down anyway? It's my personal policy always to fling boogers northward after i pick them, but i don't have that written down anywhere. a better example: it's blockbusters policy to help customers in line in the order they arrive in line, but that's not written down.
even if it is written down, it's blockbuster's private info - blockbuster being an entity protected under search & seizure laws just like you are.
you asked, policy was cited to you two or three times. employees know, it's our job. we know our shit. it's a lot easier for us to acquiesce whenever a custoemr needs an exchange (two scans and yields a grateful customer). but we're paid to uphold policy, i'm afraid.
don't you wish sometimes you could go faster than the speed limit which might seem inane on some roads? well you are constrained by authorities dictating their laws, and you live with it. so are we, but we do out best to accommodate individual situations because we're also nice, normal people (except me).
sheesh
It is not a legal requirement that any business have all policies available in writing. On the contrary - it is their right NOT to provide copies of internal policy to the public unless it is required by the proper authorities under due process of law.
Edit: There had better be a god damn good reason why, when I've been working OT and my eyes are too messed up to look at the dates, I've been sitting here reading a 6 MONTH OLD THREAD!!!!!! Whoever brought this thing up had better run........

but we do out best to accommodate individual situations because we're also nice, normal people (except me).
sheesh
Actually, it SHOULDN'T have anything to do with being nice, normal people.
The ONLY reason that you should be violating policy is because it makes better financial sense for the company.
I can't bothered to re-read this entire thread to get the gist of the problem, but it doesn't matter if the clerk was in a good mood, or if the customer was an arsehole. All that should matter was, would the "violation" have meant that the customer would have been more likely to spend more money in his lifetime than if the policy was upheld.
And the main reason for companies to post their policies (at least above and beyond what they are legally required to post) is to instill a sense of trust in the customer, encouraging them to spend more money in the store.
Funny how that works, innit??;)

I think I wrote that a long time ago.
And it was when I wasnt interested in making any sense (and my aim was to irritate somewhat). Sorry about that.
But I think what I was trying to say was that policy is private so there is no requirement to show it to the public upon demand. That is, Amazon actually sad the same thing I did, but much more succinctly. (she was abusing me? I should be so lucky).
And Oz, by saying "nice," I was referring to Blockbusters trump card policy of taking care of the customer, which is rather open ended, although its intention is of course, in the end, to make more money.

But I think what I was trying to say was that policy is private so there is no requirement to show it to the public upon demand. That is, Amazon actually sad the same thing I did, but much more succinctly. (she was abusing me? I should be so lucky).
No, I wasn't abusing you. See the "Edit:" notice on my post.
No business should be providing written copies of their policies to the public unless first reviewed by an attorney. No matter how harmless the policy may seem.
That said, BB does have a list of displayed policies on the Information poster - which should be on one of your endcaps. If memory serves me, the defective policy is on it....

I never said there was a rule1. "Don't post what Hippieness ndoesn't want to see"
If you read this whole post from the start, it has been brought up several times by morAns, who are too stupid to realize that no one wants to hear them say the same thing everyone else has already said 4 months earlier. Those people who brought it up recieved a similar reaction. If anyone who brings up these old threads actually read them, they could avoid this situation by seeing that people don't want to have random 4 month dead threads brought up with a post that adds nothing to anything. As for if I don't want to read the post don't click on it, the same can go for you. If you don't want to hear me bitch at some morAn for posting pointless things, don't read what I have to say.

1st of all why would anyone send you the "policy"? In case you haven't noticed the rating is on label and on back of dvd. There is a description of the movie contents on the box. What else do you need to know what movie you are taking home to your prude wife? The reason all of that crap is on the box is so employee's don't have to deal with stupid excuses & that would be 1

What bugs me is when a parent comes in saying that a video was too graphic for their kids. they are standing right next them, pay for it and don't bother to read the back or the rating. I had one parent come in asking for harold and kumar go to white castle, and i asked how old the child was. She said he was 10 or 11. I told her it was youth restricted and full of lanquage and everything else. she didn't even care, and just got it. she comes back an hour later, saying she wanted her money back. She didn't get a credit, just told her that i warned her previous and she was the one that still picked it up. When will customers actually listen to us?

Thanks!
I gave a exchange for a PRP to a customer because of vulgarity... He had 2, but one was just a poor movie, the other was vulgar. Because he had kids I allowed him to exchange it for equal value. However, rentals are a different story. Customers have to be aware of the rating system as well as language settings. I get way too many customers dying to see Diving Bell and the Butterfly and find out that its not on English. READ is what I say. It goes against what little profit we make - when we have hundreds of dollars in credits for customers who don't read. I am rather patient for most customers, but rating issue is one thing I don't budge on. Sorry man....

The reason why we dont give customer's credit's for movies that you find offensive is because if every customer came it and said "i find this movie crude and i cant watch it" and they wanted their money back... we would be out of business... that is why it's very important to read the back of things including movies...
I had a customer myself, who was an older woman bring back a movie "my best friend's Girl" and said it was a "Porno" and needed a credit for another movie. I told her sure but next time i cannot do that for you so please be more careful renting since movies nowa days are becomming more like "porn".
But This is just blockbuster's way of protecting themselves from going out of business... believe it or not we loose alot of money because of customers not returning movies and whatnot. so i understand the money they invest on bringing movies into the store to let people rent them and watch them and RETURN them. and when a customer does not return them... we loose that money for that movie!

I've always been a person to go by rules, so my answer is usually no to everything. I remember when "Pirates" came out. There's a bigass sticker on the cover of the box saying "Rated R--not recommended for children" and with a two women seductively poking their boobs halfway out of their half-torn vests. Even after telling each customer that it's a very "indiscretional" movie not for kids, they still came back. I left comments on the account saying I told the customer.
But like everyone else says, you gotta bend the rules a little bit to make everyone else happy.

This board is fun...i dont think there are any non employees or at least former employees on it, does anyone know if the op's policy in question is actually written down anywhere or is it just word of mouth, i did once out of boredom read the whole sop binder and i dont remember coming across this policy, but even i enforce it. mostly cause its always people with warnings on their accounts, if its a new member, ill more than likely do it, but warn them against it for later, and as so many people said, if the customer gets irate with me, (which ive had people threaten my life while i agreed to do everything they wanted) we will talk about them just as negatively as they did about us when they are gone
