View Full Version : Whats your sell strategy for online/rewards?

brantheman
June 30th, 2006, 08:44 PM
Everyone has their own style on how they sell. I was curious to know what some other strategies are other than mine. Here's what I do...

Blockbuster Online Free 30 Day Trial
I tell the customer I need to verify (and update if neccesary) their information. I then say, "Do you have an email address. We can sign you up for the Inside Blockbuster Newsletter and sometimes they email you coupons. Never spam ya." Assuming they give me an email, I enter it in and continue with the transaction. After everything is rung up, I scan the free trial slips and, of course, it'll ask if the email on the account is accurate. I type Y, and there you have it. I just throw the online slip in the bag with their rentals/purchases.

Rewards
These are difficult to sell (to me, anyway) Thursday through Sunday. On a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday when a customer is renting two or more movies (or games), I tell them it would be about a dollar or so more to get on the Rewards Program and they usually tend to give in. But Thursday through Sunday, well...meh, i'm not so successful.

So how do you do it?

Ayiyi -_- I just don't understand why it's considered so mind-blowing to see someone who has very little problem with the company :-p Regardless of how long i've been there.

Besides, when the day does come that I want to put explosives in all the movie cases, I'll have moved on with retail management under my belt.

Good times.

Well, I would start with some RESEARCH, maybe spend a little more time looking around the site, making sure that the topics haven't already been discussed to death. Because, quite honestly, at this point, I think I know more about selling onlines and rewards than many of the rhesus monkeys that are employed at managers (I know, Vixen... he's too innocent to ever have seen an episode of Sopranos). Which is actually a good thing, cause if I know how to sell them, I know how to convince MY customers that they are rip-offs and scams:D

But that's just me; I'm funny that way.

Rewards isn't a rip off ;-(

Well, depends who you sell it to and how you sell it actually. Some people on this board have posted some pretty disturbing things and people lying to get Rewards sales, so... but when I sell Rewards to someone, they're saving money.

brantheman

Been-there-heard-that about researching. Already apologized once.

I don't think Rewards is a rip off no matter who you sell it to. They still get that free non new release movie every month even if they never rent, so that pays for itself right there.

I'll never get over how much better the American Rewards program is than the Canadian one.... mind-boggling!! All this stuff about coupons for free Favourites would make it a much easier sell. I'm jealous.

Trust me on this one, immediately when you say "non-new release" the sparkle in their eyes dims and you've lost them.

The only way to recapture it is if they are renting a Non-New Release and you hold it up about 5 times and say, "This one is going to be free."

Even then it's difficult to convince the ones who are bent on saying no to any and every offer.

When I'm selling it, I sugarcoat it a little bit. I say "and one free rental a month" instead of "one free non-new release". Not really lying. But again, i've always found it easiest to sell on Mondays through Wednesdays.

You know nobody reads or understands the damn coupon. They always try and rent a NR with it at first, then you get a bitch season "they didn't explain that to me". But still it is a good program.

I'll never get over how much better the American Rewards program is than the Canadian one.... mind-boggling!! All this stuff about coupons for free Favourites would make it a much easier sell. I'm jealous.

I had a good number of Canadian customers who came to live in my town during the winter months, and many of them were on your rewards program so I got to see the differences. It was to their great dismay that their rewards coupons didn't work here, although I usually accommodated them.

It seems until a few years ago, your rewards program was very similar to ours. Mon-Wed free favorite with paid rental, monthly free favorite coupon, five paid rentals in a month gets a sixth for free (this only counted for new releases in Canada, but here we count paid favorites) - but the one thing I really liked about Canadian rewards that we didn't have was the two late fee amnesty coupons, each would eliminate the fees for one movie over one cycle.

To me, that feature would have made the sale ridiculously easy, being able to target late fee customers and practically guaranteeing a sale to each one.

Then you guys switched to the $2/off coupon booklets and nixed the M-W thing, which dumbed down your Rewards in my opinion. Since you guys dropped late fees right after we did, I can't imagine how your program would still include amnesty coupons... so I have to say with just the R5G1 (restricted to new releases) and the $2/off once per month coupon, I can see that selling Rewards now is much harder for you. (although doing the math... $2 times 12 months is $24 in coupons.. that should be an easy convincer at least).

Also, do Canadian Rewards customers still save a dollar on PRP? We never had that feature here that I can recall.

Rewards
I tell them it would be about a dollar or so more to get on the Rewards Program

I feel I should help clarify Bran's statement:

It would only be 'a dollar more' if they were getting THREE rentals on a M-W (two of them would have to be non-new releases). The rent 1 get 1 non-new release benefit takes care of one rental, and the token takes care of the other.

And Ozman hates the Rewards program (calls it a rip-off), because I'm sure it affects the loyalty of the customers he shares with his nearby Blockbuster.

Yeah, there was a point when the two programs were pretty similar. Now it's just the R5G1 for New Releases, $2 off a rental each month, 2 $1 off new retail, and I think 4 $1 off PRP. (before they stopped making the amnesty coupons for the late fees, we were told to use them as $2 off any PRP $12.99 and up). Also we do same-day reservations.... it should be, but isn't, a huge selling point. But to be honest... last night was my last shift, so I can't say I really care that much anymore! haha

LOL

k, what you do is hit up your new members. that is the EASIEST way to do it. they are dumb and don't know any better ( :D )

onlines- if they have an email on the account already, do a history and make sure no one else has given it to them yet, if they havent....score....

if they are a rewards memeber already ask for their email address so they can get their BSI coupon in their email instead of in the store, also tell them they can get the cool .99 coupons and stuff like that...OH yeah, and for providing their email address they get one month of BB online for free.

or just update their account info and ask if there is an email address they would like to add.

Rewards- always do a history of 30 days, check to see rental patterns.
monday-wenesday- if they are renting 3 new ones, tell them they get 3 old ones for for about 5 bucks more AND if they rent 2 more by the end of the month they get a NR for free....

rewards is actually quite easy, you can play around with it alot more.

there, is that better?

btw, i don't ask anyone for their email. i tell them we need to update their account with an email address for coupons and such. if they don't give it to me, fine. they still get the free month. if you hit return after you scan the e-mail barcode it'll let you exit the email screen and let you know that w/o the email address the customer will not be sent an e-mail reminder to activate their free month. but you don't NEED an e-mail.

i don't encourage this, but you can do it. BBI basically just wants e-mails so they can start sending the late rental notifications to people's emails. just one more way to try to get our movies back. though the customers won't see it that way. seriously though, don't 'sell' the online. there's nothing to sell, it's free. give it to them and try to get their email address. if you can't, no sweat.

when BBI really wants those email addresses, they'll update the POS so a little 'email is wrong/missing' message pops up. until then, i'll get as many as i can, but some people are still wary of giving out their personal info, especially with ID theft. so i'll give them the online and let them take it home and check it out.

You know there's a report that prints up with number of onlines / number of e-mails collected / percentage, and that you make your store look a little more retarded each time you give one out without an e-mail?

then why the hell do we do it? and why does the POS tell you that the only reason to get one is to notify customers and remind them to activate it. sure BBI uses the emails to track them, but when the person signs up online they give their email. the emails not already in the system account for the free trials given without entering an email address.

all that really matters is how it tallys up at the end of the period and quarter. you think everyone who gives their email address uses the free trial? hell no. some, yes. but not all. it's about the same percentage as people who don't give email addresses and take the trial home.

besides, a tenth of our free trials end up in the garbage outside anyway. sad but true. i've found them when i empty the garbage. but instead of getting pissed and saying 'screw it. what's the point if they throw them away?' i keep giving them out. because every day we have more people coming in with their online coupons telling us how much they love it.

another cool thing, most of the people that come in with coupons end up renting an additional movie and getting confection. they figure if they're saving five bucks they might as well get more stuff :D

like i said before, in this time of identity theft, why lose potential customers because they're wary of giving their email address out. another thing, how many people do you think see an email from blockbuster and delete as spam? how many people think, 'dammit, i knew they were going to spam me!' and don't sign up for it because they think BBO is another crooked business out to spam and annoy(okay, they ARE crooked, but they don't spam, so save it) hell, my ex/roommate deleted it as spam and she knows better than to think it was spam, but didn't want to be bothered by BBO.

go check your statistics that you seem to always have on hand and come back and prove me wrong. til then, don't knock it till you've tried it.

Here's some food for thought: as far as sending people to BBO without a free trial coupn thing if they won't give you their email address, guess what? your store won't get credit if they do sign up for BBO because they won't have the 'promotional code' to enter when they sign up. that means your store just lost potential revenue. because your store ONLY gets credit with that 'promotional code' entered. but hey, if you don't mind losing that revenue, no skin off my back. it's your store, your wages, your bonuses.

you're store might look 'retarded' on that initial report with the percentages and whatnot, but it all comes down to that bottom line. and if you lose out on revenue because you wouldn't give them a free trial thing without an email address, and they sign up for it anyway, that's more $ to your bottom line you just lost. you don't LOSE money if they don't sign up. but you DO LOSE money if they sign up without your store number. like i said, no skin off my back. it is YOUR STORE, YOUR WAGES, YOUR BONUSES.

then why the hell do we do it? and why does the POS tell you that the only reason to get one is to notify customers and remind them to activate it. sure BBI uses the emails to track them, but when the person signs up online they give their email. the emails not already in the system account for the free trials given without entering an email address.

all that really matters is how it tallys up at the end of the period and quarter. you think everyone who gives their email address uses the free trial? hell no. some, yes. but not all. it's about the same percentage as people who don't give email addresses and take the trial home.

besides, a tenth of our free trials end up in the garbage outside anyway. sad but true. i've found them when i empty the garbage. but instead of getting pissed and saying 'screw it. what's the point if they throw them away?' i keep giving them out. because every day we have more people coming in with their online coupons telling us how much they love it.

another cool thing, most of the people that come in with coupons end up renting an additional movie and getting confection. they figure if they're saving five bucks they might as well get more stuff :D

like i said before, in this time of identity theft, why lose potential customers because they're wary of giving their email address out. another thing, how many people do you think see an email from blockbuster and delete as spam? how many people think, 'dammit, i knew they were going to spam me!' and don't sign up for it because they think BBO is another crooked business out to spam and annoy(okay, they ARE crooked, but they don't spam, so save it) hell, my ex/roommate deleted it as spam and she knows better than to think it was spam, but didn't want to be bothered by BBO.

go check your statistics that you seem to always have on hand and come back and prove me wrong. til then, don't knock it till you've tried it.

Here's some food for thought: as far as sending people to BBO without a free trial coupn thing if they won't give you their email address, guess what? your store won't get credit if they do sign up for BBO because they won't have the 'promotional code' to enter when they sign up. that means your store just lost potential revenue. because your store ONLY gets credit with that 'promotional code' entered. but hey, if you don't mind losing that revenue, no skin off my back. it's your store, your wages, your bonuses.

you're store might look 'retarded' on that initial report with the percentages and whatnot, but it all comes down to that bottom line. and if you lose out on revenue because you wouldn't give them a free trial thing without an email address, and they sign up for it anyway, that's more $ to your bottom line you just lost. you don't LOSE money if they don't sign up. but you DO LOSE money if they sign up without your store number. like i said, no skin off my back. it is YOUR STORE, YOUR WAGES, YOUR BONUSES.

i agree with most everything you said. But, the way it was explained to me, is that the company does not want people giving out the trials without the email addresses. so we don't. I prefer to take the loss in TNR...if that's what happens as a result.....than get hollered at for 45 minutes for being at 20% of email addresses. The last report that came out before i went on vacation, my store had given away 102 trials and 100% with addresses. the way we were told, that is the correct thing to do..

The report that keith is talking about is kinda cool. It gives you your actual # of onlines scanned, email addresses recieved and your conversion rate. so, you can tell if your people are actually explaining the promotion correctly.

as far as the people who don't want to give thier email addresses, we just say, that is no problem, and direct them to the website and give them the promo code. so that way, if they do indeed want to try it out, they still get it for free and we get the credit.

That is the best thing you can do. That way, whether they give their email instore or not, they are still being directed to the Online site where they will have to give their email anyway.

Thursday through sunday, I try to push the free rental they get for joining, especially if they come up with BSI. I'll immediately chime in about them getting that one free, followed by the benefits of it, then mentioning the price and how it's actually only $5 more.

And if they have 3 or more rentals, I tell them how close they are to the free one.

And don't forget to mention that they get $54 in free coupons (or whatever those 12 add up to) just for being a member.

And as for the online, I try and push the 4 free coupons. That, and notifying them for unlimited rentals, 3 at a time, they pay almost as much as they normally do for 4 in-store rentals, which they'll be getting free anyways.

Or you can just take a friend's email and put it in the email field.

Perhaps that is why I am getting emails about BB Online from the store of a certain IHBB member who shall remain nameless, but better poke their head out of the foxhole soon:mad:

FYI, you want to sell rewards on the benefit that they will recieve through out the year, not during that transaction. and doing a credit is a violation (for credit fraud) and credits are being very closely watched. so i would not make a habit of A-doing it and B-telling people you do it. there are corporate hawks all over this board....

If you worked at my store, and I came in and opened one morning, looked over the credits and saw some kind of random overring credit that had absolutely no explanation ala comment on the account, you can sure bet your ass you'd be getting a phone call from me. And you'd likely get canned, too. Enjoy your promotion while it lasts. If you're taking advantage of credits like this now, I can only assume it will get worse when you have more authority. It won't be long before they fire your ass.

And while we're on the subject of fuckheads giving unjustified credits, I once had a new CSR think that he was being slick by "voiding" a movie for his friend who was renting something. His friend left with the movie (and fortunately returned it).

He was out of a job the next day. Apparently some CSR's think that "VOID" means free rental. Not the first time it's happened according to my SM.

Anyway, good luck at the unemployment office, ssjaut. You might want to leave early, I hear the lines can get REALLY long on the weekends.

And you wonder why BBI is so close to bankruptcy. You hire fucking THIEVES, who rip off the company, and their excuse is "I don't care"

I love how nearly everything revolves around voids. Whenever something is stolen, it's always magically voided beforehand. Want to steal some candy? Ring it up and void it before you do it!

What the fuck? I don't really understand the extra effort. What are they thinking - that by voiding it, they'll be able to say, "Oh, look - see, I voided it, so it must be back on the shelf."

And with rentals - voiding still checks the movie back! That's probably the worst way to steal a rental - to void it.

Yet I continually hear from people "higher up" that voids are where most of the internal theft (concerning credits, that is) lies. And I ask: why? If I was going to steal something - the last thing I'd do is void it. That's like announcing to everyone, "I know this item was just stolen, but I just wanted to let you know that, I was the LAST PERSON to handle it. Oh look, an elephant!"

Is the rewards less expensive for everyone else, or is it just my store?
Our rewards dropped from $9.99 to $7.99 (plus I usually take the $2 off coupon for the month) and it makes it a ton easier...
With our new "Promotion" of a rewards program for $6 I was able to sell 32 on a friday night, then saturday day Iwas able to get another 30.
I don't know if the drop in price has happened to anyone else, and how it's affected them.
the night I got 32, our store has 112 for the day (4 peoples contribution, 3 of which were the night shift(I think the night shift was roughly 95))
anyone else get a sudden boost?

Hi!

It's $9.95/year at my store, although I get the occasional coupon that will drop a buck or two off the annual fee, and here lately i've been getting those "free trial coupons" for the rewards where it lets them use it for three months or so for free. Stupid coupon, though. Let's just give them MORE free shit so they can give us ten bucks once a year!

We're lucky to do one reward for a day now. I miss the rewards-pushing days, though. Now it's all ONLINES ONLINES ONLINES and it's getting really repetitive and harder and harder to get our numbers since we've given the online to everyone who wants it. At least selling rewards was a challenge.

That's kind of the idea. As far as corporate is concerned, if you're a customer and you walk into a Blockbuster store, you are NOT under any conditions walking out of that store without an Online coupon.

Sucks, but hey, the customers that continue to do business with us know what they're getting into when they step foot in the door. :D We've been consistently pushing crap on them for YEARS now!

And honestly, I wouldn't be too fond of Rewards if I were you. Rewards is actually the root cause of all this never-ending "SALE SALE SALE SALE SALE OR DIIIIEEEEE!!!!" bullshit. All these ridiculous programs/sales quotas first began with the Rewards Program in the late 1990s and it just kind of grew from there. Admittedly it's gotten ten times worse since the company went into survival mode, but still, Rewards got the ball rolling for it all. :(

I am a franchisee store... When I started 4 years ago I sold 31 Rewards in a single day. Needless to say our office called me soon after that and chewed me out for this becuase we have to pay BBV for every one we sell. It is sad to me though becuase the Rewards is avtually a great opportunity for both the store and the customer. The customer benefits if they rent at all becuase of the free rentals. We benefit becuase they spent that $10 bucks so they are going to come back to us first before our competition. We don't push the Online... as it pulls from the stores active customer base. So no new sells strategies from me. Just been awhile since I posted, so heres a new post!!!

I hate:

Cher
Bette Midler
Marilyn Manson
Britney Spears
Madonna
EtcAbsolutely love:

GARBAGE
Shirley Manson
The Cranberries
No Doubt (but not Gwen Stefani solo...just with the group)
Evanescence
Kelly Clarkson (i've hugged her! twice!!!)
The KillersI'm really not all that stereotypical. People usually assume my BF is gay, but not me. I'm actually a chick magnet, unwillingly. I can't help it i'm so fucking sexy though, you know?

So are you the top then?

I think the new "PC" terms are pitcher and catcher, not top and bottom.

Don't forget Liza!!!

Nah, I think that fag hag would be more interested in Bran....... tho, from the sound of it, he's too straight for her.

(Did Liza ever marry/date a straight man??)

:D
