View Full Version : The Cover Box Hall of Fame

Being the bitter cynics that we are, we can often be on the shelves or digging through the new pre-streets and we find a movie that's just particularly hilarious for whatever reason. Usually it's the cover box that does it. These are my favorites, and I'll add more as I think of them. Amazon search them if the images don't work.

The Delta Force
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/0792846850.01._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ_V1056490598_.jpg

Could it be any more obvious that Norris' and Marvin's heads are photoshopped on? Did they really go up to Lee Marvin and say, "could you stand here in a black jumpsuit and hold a bazooka? It's for the cover. Yeah, don't look like you're going to fire the bazooka. Just stand there and look directly at the camera. Yeah, there you go."

Incidentally, this cover is a prime example of the "Dyslexic Marquee" phenomenon, in which the names featured on the cover box are not in the same order as the actors in the picture, making it look like Chuck Norris is the decrepit old man (well, he wasn't when Delta Force was made).

Word of Honor
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B000228EZ4.01._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ_V1087518849_.jpg

Okay, it seems to be a regular-looking cover box, decent art, gets the job done, even has a quote that...WTF?!?!?

Read the quote.

"YOU'LL SIT UP AND TAKE NOTICE OF DON JOHNSON'S STRONG PERFORMANCE."

You'll...sit up. And "take notice". Of DON JOHNSON'S performance.

So you're just lying there on your couch, halfway through the movie, and all of a sudden you leap to the edge of your seat, knocking your beer and chips to the floor, and exclaim, "Holy crap! I can hardly believe the performance turned in by Don Johnson!"

PCU

It's not as evident anymore, but this is what the VHS cover looked like

http://www.moviegoods.com/Assets/product_images/1000/183348.1000.A.jpg

You'll notice someone's missing. Why, it's comedy legend, Sir David Spade! What a glaring omission from a movie's cover box!

Oh wait. The VHS box was made in 1994, and the DVD box in about 2000. Maybe they didn't forget him. Maybe he was only in the movie for ten minutes, and was inserted into the new cover because he became a "star" after the movie's release. Very clever, it probably quadrupled the rental revenue. Because nothing says smash comedy like David Spade.

We don't have this anymore, and Amazon shows a different cover. 'Nuff said.

I had a series of customers complaining that they rented a gay TV series, not knowing it was gay at all. I told each of them the cover was pretty clear on that...

And I'm tired of seeing this bright and sunny, terribly imagined cover in my Drama BSI section. Take an exciting trip with a C-list director!

This is a good one. Check out Wesley Snipes' laissez-faire attitude to the situation; he couldn't give a toss! But look at Tamzin Outwaithe (of 'EastEnders' fame). She's loving that slice o' Hollywood. Oh, yes.

Split Second
http://www.dvdloc8.com/images/dvdcover/16870.jpg

The cover itself isn't bad, it's just the synopsis on the back.

He's seen the future. Now he has to kill it. He'll need bigger guns. In the year 2008, the cops are better armed than before, but nothing has prepared them for this. Swift, sharp-clawed and deadly, something moves among them on the streets,in the alleyways, on the rooftops, tearing out human hearts and devouring them. Maverick cop "Harley" Stone (Rutger Hauer) lost his partner to the beast, and now it looks as if his girlfriend Michelle (Kim Cattrall) is next onithe killer's list. Even in the future, there aren't guns big enough to stop the creature's deadly force, but Harley has no choice. As the action explodes into a deadly struggle to save Michelle, Stone must track the killerito its lair before he too becomes its victim. It could be all over in a Split Second.

My favorite is "the cops are better armed than before." Before what?

Well my friend, it's obvious that in the movies past, the cops were armed with slingshots and jellybean ammo. In the future, they'll move up to handguns. Understand now?

What the fuck is up with the woman on the cover? Is she constipated? And the guy in the back looks like the chef who prepared my dinner at Macaroni Grill.

And then Mercenary for Justice...when I first saw the cover I was like, "Well, it has guns on the cover, of course, but at least not Steven Seagal making the same face and aiming a gun again! But oh, wait. It's on the bottom right corner of the cover :(

Split Second

Funny you should mention this. I actually rented this steaming pile of shit one day when we were short on prereleases. This was, of course, in the era of unconverted BSI, and I noticed that the back of the rental insert had a synopsis for some other movie entirely on it. So I brought a couple inserts home and printed out a new one with my own, more accurate, description*. Amusingly, a couple weeks later someone checked it out. I wonder if he noticed.

(*It was subtly scathing but I don't remember how it went at all.)

OJ's ex-girlfriend in a film with a creepy stalker guy wearing a skimask on the cover. Released during his murder trial.

Somehow the UK designers think that George Clooney will help sell the movie... actually they're probably right as that crappy "Good Night and Good Luck" rents really well.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m114/bitscared/at50447s1sza.jpg

In 1889, the vicious "Queen of the South Sea" collects men that she murders during sex, thanks to a magical eel that lives inside of her vagina and bites the penises off of those who can't satisfy her lust. Finally, one man pleasures her long enough to reach inside and pull out the creature, which instantly turns into a dagger. Furious, the Queen vows that she'll take her revenge on the man's great-granddaughter, and goes into the sea to wait for one hundred years. A century passes, and Tania, a plucky anthropologist, finds an ancient book on the legend of the Queen and decides to investigate. She charters a boat to take her to the area where the Queen is believed to have disappeared, but while skindiving, a tidal wave destroys the vessel and Tania suddenly finds herself tied to a bed in a mysterious room. When a mystical eel enters her, she is possessed by the spirit of the bloodthirsty Queen. After killing a pair of drunken punks in a lascivious manner, she sees the image of Erika, a pop singer, on television and recognizes her as the descendant of the man the Queen vowed revenge on a century before. Armed with machine guns and impervious to bullets, the female assassin starts cutting a bloody swath through the city in an attempt to murder Erika, taking out scores of innocent bystanders, policemen and soldiers on her way. Erika's only hope is to recover the magic dagger that her great-grandfather has bequeathed to her for just this sort of emergency.

I gotta see this one......:D

i love the info in the link that you provided. Wonder what the excuse is for the wedding scene at the end of the Little Mermaid where the minister gets wood...very obviously gets wood!!

I like their description better, anyway, less bullshit and more to the point:

This cult 80s exploitation film managed to shock even the most cynical of audiences, and it remains today a shameless cinematic feast of sex, gore, and goddesses. An evil Asian spirit with a limitless sexual appetite possesses the body of a young woman and goes on a killing spree; she has returned to fulfill a curse of the family of the one man whom she could not vanquish. Tag line: "first she mates, then she terminates!"

Except with the full description, you know the ENTIRE storyline, so you'd only be watching the movie for the sex.

Oh, nevermind... what was I thinking??

Well Sienna and Danny have got a lot more famous since they made Layer Cake so Im not surprised the company did that.

The ones that make me laugh are the really old films of people like Mel Gibson and Nicole Kidman etc. They were only a bit player in them and now their faces are now on the covers to go into one of those shite boxsets that they give away free with shitty DVD players :p

They don't usually put them in the same 'pose' as their most famous film, though! :D

I wouldn't be surprised if that's actually a publicity shot from Casino Royale!!!
