View Full Version : What else should be reasonable to have access to on the laptop?

Some of the questions may seem obvious and limited because of the restrictive software (the only "favorites" are the Blockbuster.com pages and the Netflix Cancel Membership page, at least for us.)

The laptop does seem useful is finding movies by more than just the first part of the title. We have this giant red book that we used to look up for movies with actors/actresses and such, and it's a lot easier just to type it into the computer to let the website do all the work there.

It's also good for proving to customers through the "check stores in your area for this title" feature that, no, we don't carry that particular low profile film instead of being asked to call 3 different stores for them to tell us "no, we never carried that, sorry."

I understand that they want the machine to be used solely to sell onlines, but it could very easily double as a powerful in-store information tool on the side. I wish imdb was listed as a favorite. Also, a link to the site that gives up-to-date information on the Xbox 360 Backward Compatibility list would be nice too.

Our laptop isn't restricted at all yet. Basically, you could walk into my store right now and get on IHBB, or any porn site you wanted to. I actually had to kick some kids off of Myspace a few days ago.

It's a shame you don't have access to IMDb. We do on the UK PCs, and it's very useful when deciphering the inane ramblings of the average customer.

We also have access to our special orders website, so you don't have to phone them to find out the price of something, or if it's in stock.

Someone needs to make a customer rambling-to-english translator. I think it would be useful to people who are new to the company and still in training. For example...

"What the fuck is a restocking fee?! I'm not paying it because you guys don't have late fee's!"

...would translate to...

"You mean I owe $1.25 for having this movie out 36 days past the due date? Wow. I'm a cheap bastard and I refuse to pay that, and i'll be keeping Nacho Libre until this time next month."

its easy to have access to other sites on the laptops.. you just control-alt-F8 it and put the password in and click "close site kiosk" and wala.. click on interenet explorer and then you will have to try real hard not to visit ihbb at work!

The other day the store DIED after 10pm so me and the csr alternated just taking our breaks behind the counter watching you-tube videos and surfing the web instead of going to the back room.. was kinda fun

Jackass crap like that is what is going to ruin the ability for us to use the laptops for legit purposes like searching IMDB and signing people up for email addresses.

Here's a fucking hint, if you are at work, then get off your fat ass and WORK! Don't fuck around. There is always something to do.

see, i thought the same thing at first. But, as much as i love my crew, and trust them, give them a laptop with internet access and all hell would ensue.

we should be thankful that we have them to begin with. it was an expensive gift...5000 laptops....no matter how stripped or slow they are...

Yet another reason I believe franchises are sucking hind tit. This would have been alot easier than using the big blue book to search for a title with "that guy who was in that movie doing that thing". The owner would have never approved anything like this.

Hey dude kyza's cool. You can disagree with the fact that she plays online while she works, but don't need to be an fuckface about it (like calling her a fat ass? where did that come from?). You don't even know the shit her store (whole district) puts her through, but you would if you'd read her other posts through the past few months.

I had heard that we had access to yahoo.com on the laptops. (My store still doesn't have ours so I don't know for sure). On yahoo, theres a place for "yahoo email sign up" or something. Its free, and you just get people to input their info and there you have it.

IMDB would make perfect sense. That would actually help us service customers better, especially for us film aficionados so we'd only need one piece of information to basically answer any question.

i was just saying what is possible.. not that i actually did it myself.. For your information lately i have had most of my coworkers mad at me for working TOO much.. staying tons of extra hours and putting in extra work on top of my second job when i should have quit last month! so please dont insult me.. i was just saying that its easy to use the laptop for anything.. not that it should be done! In fact.. it was actually one of my coworkers who figured it out and has been surfing myspace at work.. so please think before you yell at me.. i am not the lazy worker i somehow made myself sound like okies?

thank you for this.. i appreciate it.. and things have gotten so much worse as our two csrs quit and we had to hire two new ones.. the lady who was going to be our SM went to PL and the girl who is acting SM is leaving to work at Lowes... but i haven;t been letting it get to me anymore.. and sometimes the store IS slow enough to surf the internet during a break or lunch.. doesn't mean i do it.. but i dont see the problem if the store is dead and you are on break!

I still think it's strange that so many other stores' laptops are restricted. Does logging in as the administrator take off restrictions? Because that's what I've always got mine logged in as.

Lately, we've been using the following websites pretty often:

Blockbuster.com (obviously)
IMBD
Google
Yahoo.com/Hotmail.com (for email signups)We've got those coupons that you can print from your compass mail out there by the laptop, too. It's definitely helping with activations.

The reason we do not get IMDB is that they are partners with amazon.com and in the near future imdb will be offering film downloads in a partnership with amazon.

Hehe. We're always logged in as Admin. That would explain why my ASM is on myspace all day and i'm able to visit Youtube restriction-free.
