View Full Version : I don't have a problem with Blockbuster, just this...

The constant bombardment of customers.

I know, I know, Blockbuster employees are technically in retail, but I don't think corporate realizes how annoying it is to customers. I sometimes HATE having to go into Blockbuster because I know I'll be annoyed to buy stuff I don't want.

Not all customers are aware of certain programs, that's fine, but stop ramming the onlines down my throat. I also just walked through a little maze of a line, which leads me through endless amounts of pop, candy and popcorn. I'm PREEETTY sure if I wanted something, I would've grabbed it already.

I'm sorry if I come across as rude, but I find being bombarded by employees to be rude. I know its not your fault guys, its corporate, but I'd love to see a statistic, no matter how small, of people who choose not to go to Blockbuster because they hate being annoyed.

Yep, Zoo said it best. Trust me, we know how much a lot of customers get tired of it (Hell, I get tired of it when i'm on the other end of the counter at a different retailer). But know this: A lot of us get threatened with our jobs as far as sales go. We're often given unrealistic goals that need to be met in a week, and a lot of people, particularly MODs are constantly being stressed out over it. Granted, we could leave at anytime, but some of us (like me) still think the job is worth going to. Some of us arent paid half bad and get flexible schedules. So anyway, as Zoo said, be polite to us, and we'll do the same. :)

Nah, I understand, like I said in the post, I know you guys have to. And don't worry, I'm always polite with my "no thanks". Though, they continue to push sometimes. That's when it gets bad and annoying to me. The initial "We have this which does this, are you interested?" is good enough.

I just basically take advantage of the Rewards program when it comes to renting. I've tried Total Access, and just Blockbuster Online in general, and hate to say it, Netflix (to me) is superior and better for what I need. BB Online's site was less attractive and more buggy when it comes to my queue. I've received films I didn't ask for, and gotten DVDs I had not arranged to be #1 and the movies I had put at #1 were said to be Available now, so I don't know how that happens.
Netflix's design is sleeker, I find their shipping and receiving to be quite faster, and I'm a fan of the profile system you can set up for multiple people under the same account.

Sorry guys, Netflix is the one for me. I get them to do my online dvds and I just pay to rent at Blockbuster. I don't see what the problem is.

That's what I've been hearing. I hope I didn't offend you with the initial post. I've heard quite a lot about how much is expected out of Blockbuster employees, so I know not to freak out on you guys. It's just frustrating, but as it was stated above, it seems to be frustrating for both the customer and employee...

Like I stated above, I have my reasons for choosing Netflix over Blockbuster Total Access.
But for the record, I'm in the store a couple times a week, and I'm already saving money with the Rewards. That's fine enough for me, thank you.

I've got to laugh about this. Here we are off the clock, relaxing and reading a message board and we're STILL trying to get people to sign up for Total Access. Really, I don't think anyone can know how bad the pressure is unless you work for the company. My stores manager had to go to the hospital and get surgery from a stress related illness.

Anyways, welcome to the board ThomsonAutomatic, we hope you enjoy your stay and join us in b*tching about the wonderful world of Blockbuster and the dumb@sses that run it from the corporate office.

yea, if only more customers were as understanding as you, but most are just " damnit quit offering me shit" To which I wanna say, " well I will Quit offering Shit to you if you are willing to pay my bills, car payment, insurance, put food on my table, and such for me losing my job for not doing my job."

but I will go more than likely " I apologize we are just required to ask everyone if they wanna try these promotions"

Yeah, I do feel bad for you guys, which is why I still rent at the store and I try to be polite as possible. And no offense to hardcore keith, but even though I said I chose Netflix over BBonline for certain (and good enough) reasons he still tried to make a selling point about Total Access. They don't continue to try and make you order fries once when you've said no. As I've stated before, I DO say no thank you. It's when I get the pitch rammed down my throat afterwards. Are you reading ANY of my responses?

And besides, I can't remember the last time a fast food place asked if I wanted fries with that.

If it's as simple as the customers to say "No thank you" when they don't want something, it should be just as simple for certain employees to stop the sales pitch.

That'll work until something new comes along for us to push, and as soon as one of the managers see that warning, they'll delete it. Trust me ;)

But at least you're on Rewards. Rewards really is a great program even for the occasional renter. I mean, you automatically get over $50 dollars in rentals for a year for ten bucks, so even if you only go in once a month, you can use your coupon and rent a movie thats been out for more than a year and not pay a penny. Not to mention, you get a neat keychain card too

Oh, and I have some advice: Tell them you already HAVE Total Access and your wife or whoever does the exchanges on her way to work accross town or something. Thats a believable story since Blockbuster accounts are universal.

Selling is an art-form... not every employee of Blockbuster knows how to do it.

You have to choose the right deal to push, and that's where most CRSs fall short.

I'm going to use our current UK bundles as an example, mmkay?

Let's say customer comes to the counter with 1 of our 7-night films (for those not in the know, our 7-night films are £2.75 each or 3 for £5). Pressured CSR desperately pushes our current confectionery bundle of 2 rentals + chocolate bar + ice cream for £10. Not because he/she thinks the customer will want it, but because they have been told that's the deal to PUSH PUSH PUSH. However, what was the relevant offer? The 3 for £5 deal of course. If the customer had missed the sign (and customers often do), they might actually think it was worth doing.

I would say the reason the majority of customers get pissed off with sales pushes is that they're being offered stuff that's completely irrelevant to them, and are being done so in a way that doesn't make it sound appealing. I always push the most relevant deal, and do so in a way that makes the customer feel as though I'm doing them a favour.

I'm not saying we don't get ignorant customers who refuse to listen to what we're saying, and fully subscribe to the belief that we could never offer them anything they want. That said, most customers aren't like that.

To the OP, I say this: sometimes you're going to be offered something you dont want. But every once in a while, you'll be offered something you may want. Please don't switch off your brain to assume that every time a cashier opens their mouth, it is to annoy or con you. Very often, customers bring up parts of deals that result in only a few more pennies to get something else, or sometimes it even works out cheaper by taking something else. And since there are always several deals on at the same time, don't assume that you would've noticed the signage promoting such an offer.

I know it can be a pain, but I can say that I personally never try to pressure someone into doing something unless I really feel it would benefit them. Though I can't speak for every employee, but this is what I was taught...

I went to another Blockbuster store the other day to see if they had a game that I was looking for, and was waiting for the CSR to finish with his customer at the counter. The customer was renting an Xbox game and all I heard him tell the customer about is the online! I was tempted to tell the customer myself about the 2 for 10 dollar game rental special, but opted not to.

Yes he should have, 90% of the customers opt for the 2 for 10 deal when offered. Another $2. Hell we missed bonus last quarter by about $100. If my CSR's would try a little harder and SL's we could all have made extra money.

Fortunately, I don't have to work a fraction as hard for a bonus, with my current position. Even though there is only an annual bonus, it is a sizeable one. Can't say I miss working at BBV.

As for Thomson: (not trying to sell you anything, BTW) How long ago did you try Blockbuster Online? There have been updates to the site and new benefits (Total Access) that may be improvements since you last tried. Even with the benefits of the Rewards program, it sounds like you are spending a lot of money while you are in-between your NetFlix rentals.

Your store manager should have been totally on you guys if it was only $100 under the threshold. That totally sux. Last ditch effort, if the team couldn't pull it through, the SM should have just bought $100 worth of product. Minimum SM bonus is like 10% of their salary... much more than $100.

Make damn sure he/she's keeping track of where you guys are at this quarter so that doesn't happen again.

Draconian, I tried it before and during Total Access. I'm going to give it another go in a month or so.
And for the record, I'm never really "in-between" my Netflix rentals. I've been on the program for almost 3 years now, and I've got it down to a science where I can watch a Netflix movie every day, and never have to worry about not having one. It's all about when I mail my returns out, and I've got it down pat. In the time where it was a long weekend with no mail, sure, that stalled my scheduling, but now with the Watch It Now feature, I can bring out my laptop, hook it up to the television and watch a Netflix movie. It's pretty sweet.
I still rent in store because I like doing it. I like browsing around the store. I like paying for a rental, getting a free older film, then buying something to drink and eat. It sounds weird, but I know I'm not the only one. I also like seeing former co-workers and catching up with them.

If you have a problem with Blockbuster's "bombardment", then don't go into Hollywood Video. Not only do they have similar "rewards" programs and a couple of other in-store programs, they also have craploads more concessions than we do, often including chips, snack mixes (like Chex Mix or Gardetto's), beef jerky, and Rice Krispies treats. You could literally make a meal (including soda and ice cream) in a Hollywood Video store. I thought that the one in my hometown was bad until I saw one in Savannah, which not only had all the same stuff, but also several different brands of jerky! Apparently, Hollywood is big on dried beef products!

I've been in Hollywood Video, and I continue to maintain the belief that Blockbuster is by far the best video rental store. The HV I went to was dirty looking, poorly lit, and disorganized. The employees were also lifeless, unlike the ones at Blockbuster.

My SM just went through all the confection, and ended up with a TON of stuff to transfer and destroy. Most of it didn't sell because we have a grocery store really close by, and the stuff was cheaper over there. We have the same problem with pop. I know summertime is the best time for concessions, especially pop, sodas, Cokes, soft drinks, bottled beverages, apertifs, etc., What's more, our "summer" actually begins here (temperature-wise) this month, with highs already in the 80's. Now, if we can just get Coke to come and either fix or replace our broken cooler!!!!

yell, scream, bitch, whine, complain. EVERYDAY until your coke rep's eyes are bleeding. or refuse your next shipment. having soda in a cooler that doesnt work is pointless.

I have to push things at the counter, too. If you aren't interested, politely cut them off at the pass ... and tell them you understand they have to pitch stuff but you aren't interested in anything else. Saves the clerk and you both time and aggrevation. Best done with a smile ...

For once, giving something away: we got a couple boxes of a "special BBV edition" of Nick magazine (from the Nickelodeon channel), which goes out with rental or purchase of Charlotte's Web. It seems a little mismatched, a movie aimed at young children with a "'tween" magazine. However, I changed my tune when the trailer disc had an Evanescence-type music video from the flick.

the problem is we hire eighteen year olds who are looking to get free rentals and think they get to watch movies at work for barely over minimum wage and try to make them sales people in what should be a retail store. then its pounded down our throats that we need to establish a sales culture. if they want me to be a f-ing salesman, then post the position as a sales position and pay me like a salesman. i want to be in customer service, offer programs that actually will work for an individual customer based on their needs, not pounding one program down everybody's throat until they don't want to come to the store anymore. my SM just quit after over ten years in the company because of the BS pressure to sell and meet certain numbers. half of our active memberships were there cuz she was such a kick a-- person. but they corporate didn't give a damn. we are among tops in our district in everything but activations, doesn't matter. one of the most profitable stores in our whole state (3 of our regions 14 districts), doesn't matter. its online online online. cant be successful business if you cant sell sell sell

Hiring people is the managers problem, should be screening for good sales type people. Yes there us pressure, and in case you didn't notice we are a retail store. Got news for you, it's like this in most big retail companys. Corp is changing and they have no qualms about replacing anybody. They will fill positions with people who can do the job. You gotta change with the time or move on.
Remember "There is always someone out there better than you" .

Works for me. Nothing for you UNLESS you sell.

What you are suggesting (sitting on your arse and watching movies) has a pay scale... called WELFARE. Do the fucking job, you lazy arsehole, or we'll find someone who can.

The problem with minimum wage is, oftime you end up with people that are overpaid!!

From "Customers Say the DARDNEST Things" :

So, this guy comes in.... Hispanic name, but he looked like a Jew, go figure.

He has a late movie. Says the movie was late because he was dead for three days. And it was Easter week-end, too.

I mean, who does this guy think he is, trying to get away without paying a late fee, the Son of God or something?

:D
