View Full Version : Yes! I hate Blockbuster!

At last a place to voice my displeasure regarding BB. Like the site founder I was charged late fees on movies that were returned on time. I was a great Blockbuster customer, rented 5 movies a weekend, was late at least 25% of the time and paid my late fees without question.

So after being a loyal customer for many, many years I got hit with late fees for movies that were returned on time. I talked to the staff, the assistant manager, the store manager and escalated my problem as high as I could; the best offer I got was 50% off my late fees. I was quite unhappy to not get a full refund on the late charges, because I wasn't late, I didn't understand why I should be penalized for their employees checking in the movies late, that was their fault not mine. BB did not take into account that I had never disputed late fees before, that I had been a member/customer for 10 years, that I rented 4-5 movies every weekend. It was at that point I decided they obviously did not value me as a customer and so I never returned.

I decided to buy DVD's instead of renting them. I actually spend less money on movies that way. I love the fact that Netflix has forced BB to do away with their late fee cash cow. I suspect BB will go back to its former predatory practices given the chance.

So about six years ago BB lost me as a customer. I guess they didn't see one person as an important customer. And the truth may be they probably still do not care about me, although I do suspect they miss my money.

Hey Sar!! :)

Sorry I was just out for a sec (zipped over to BB to exchange my TA movie before they close so the center will send out my new one tomorrow.. figure if I wait 'til tomorrow to make the exchange the center might not hear about it until whenever the store uploads their info). Actually does anyone have the insider info for me? When is the best time to bring in my TA movies so I get my next one in the mail as soon as possible?

When does BB "upload" the info to the distribution center that they received my return (so the ball can get rolling on the distribution center sending me my next one)?

(egh looks like this thread isn't about whatever it was about anymore.. oh well) Eliza Dushku gets mentioned and that happens. :)

A CUSTOMER?!?!?

Wish you would give a bit more details if you can remember. Like, the day you returned them, the day you claimed to have returned them, etc. It may have been the same problem God (Crisedge, site owner) ran into: FOS oopsy.

Even still, given the information you gave us, i'd have taken them off, depending on how large the amount was. If you were as loyal as you said you were, and never disputed them before...hell, I dont know why they WOULDNT take them off. Was it a lot?

If he did not and it was an FOS oopsy. then it would have been taken care of immediatly..

If it escalated as high as it did, it's doubtful it was a store error, since those are siphoned out and corrected before issues get to the DL.
However, the customer wouldn't be posting here six years later if there weren't truly a bitter taste in his mouth about BB, which could only really result if the customer honestly believes there was some injustice.

So I think it was one of those horrible situations where the customer THINKS he did something a certain way, but only because his memory is unreliable. When it's a month later, mondays and tuesdays blend together; fridays and saturdays blend together. Another likely case is telling the teenage son to drop it off -- teenage son says sure and tosses the movie in the back seat of his jeep, where it sits for weeks until BB calls and sends a bill to the parents. The son says "oh shit" and insists he dropped them off (avoid punishment by blaming Blockbuster) -- meanwhile he sneaks off to a dumpster the next day and disposes of the movie, no one the wiser. The parents defend the son of course (why would he lie?) so much that they claim they dropped it off themselves to avoid the CSRs conversation even remotely leading to this possibility.
In both cases, BB is correct.

Yeah, back in those historical days when BBI actually made money. Remember how nice that was??;)

And is this a good place to point out that hypocrasy of the average BBI employee that NEVER believes the customer, but as soon as something similar happens to them, they bitch and moan to high heaven?? (Like the bloke that got charged for Online for six months after the free trial ended, without realising it??)

How right you are, Bran. I used to get women screaming at me, demanding I check in a movie that "they returned". I'd ask, "Did you yourself return the movie?" Without fail, it would be a son/daughter/girlfriend/ex-husband/neighbor/boss/babysitter who insists it was returned.

Then 2 hours later it would mysteriously show up in the drop box.

I now rent cars to people at my new job, and we do NOT do benefit of the doubt checkins here. :D

my favorite is the customers on the movie pass that come in and return 1 movie and try to rent 2 - I tell them they still have one out and they insist that it was returned weeks ago.

they claim that several weeks ago they dropped off the movie in the drop box

I check their history and they have never once not exchanged 2 movies for 2 new movies in the same transaction

they have been renting one movie every visit for the last few weeks w/out saying anything or trying to rent a 2nd movie

I ask them why they put the movie in the drop box since they have the movie pass and they make up some dumb excuse like "I did it on accident" or "I forgot there were no late fees"

When you inform them that the movie was not returned and they cannot rent a 2nd movie for free, they demand you either check the other movie in or just credit off the rental price until WE fix it.

Why can't they just admit that they lost the movie! Now we have to just check the movie in and lose it at inventory - good thing I put a warning on this guy's account - a few weeks later he tried it again!

Yeah 6 years later and I'm still pissed. Kinda sad, but I certainly don't give BB my money anymore. I just delight in the fact this site exists.

And for those who believe I fucked up, I did not, the employees did. I dropped off the 4 movies in the drop box just before 10:30 am, movies were due by noon. The following Friday when I went to rent movies I was informed of my late fees. They told me the movies were returned at 2:00 pm. So, it actually took the employees at the store location approximately 3 1/2 hours to get around to checking in my movies. But somehow I was being penalized for them not properly doing their jobs.

When I was late, I was late and always owned up to it and paid the late fees without question. But I was extremely unhappy to be charged late fees when I was on time. And I feel that not only do I have that right, but I still feel I deserve a refund for those late fees. That is why after all these years I am still angry, because I still deserve a refund that I never got.

You ever think about calling customer service, or sending an email, letter, etc.? I happen to know that one of the main jobs that District Managers have is resolving customer complaints. Even when they KNOW the customer is wrong, they are charged with the responsibility of making that customer happy. Unless it was something extreme, like a $200 balance, I'm pretty sure they would have just credited it off.

Most companies work that way. Hopefully you can learn from this, because at some time in your life you are going to be "wronged" by another business, and it'd be better for you to handle it wisely, rather than complaining six years later.

Sorry, this isn't full of holes. I moved from my former residence 5 years ago, and this happened prior to my moving. Now it could have possibly been 5 1/2 years ago. Or maybe the timing of the non return roll-out was different in different parts of the country, I really don't know. I do know I returned the videos on time, they did not give me a 2 to 3 hour grace period. And I did not need a grace period anyways, I personally returned the movies at about 10:30 in the morning. I never remember ever getting a grace period in all the years I did use BB, if I was late I paid late fees. Granted it has been so long and the policies I assume have changed, because late fees are not charged anymore, but I'm told restocking fees are eventually charged. I wouldn't know because I am a former customer, so I haven't had to deal with that.

You can chose not to believe me, and you know what, I understand that because my complaint affects your livelihood not mine. But, as a company whose customers are its livelihood, you would think complaints wouldn't be received with such criticism. But what should I expect from a company that still owes me a measly amount of money, that they refused to refund. The jist of my issue is that I deserved a refund and didn't get it. I have a problem with that. Had they refunded the money I'd still be a customer, had it been handled professionally by BB I'd be happy, but it wasn't.

I know this is hard to believe, but there actually isn't any secret SOP chapter on strategically holding rentals in sorted piles until they're late and then checking them in. If your item was checked in several hours late, and it wasn't found on the shelf, then it was returned several hours late.

1) Your compaint doesn't affect us. Believe it or not, we have lives outside of work, and I don't go home crying when someone complains about something. We come to this website because we all have something in common (we work for the same company), and we occasionally try and help out a customer if they have questions. Usually they react badly, like you.

2) We're not criticizing you. We're telling you how the system works. As said before, we don't just leave them sitting around for several hours at a time. Ever. They're typically checked in once to twice an hour. If it was on the shelf, any fees would have been taken care of immidiately.

3) No company is going to reward a refund that isn't validated (except maybe Wal-Mart). Also, it doesn't help that you have a past of returning movies late. Whether you've paid them before or not, "I know i'm always late, but this time I wasnt!" really doesn't sound believable, especially when you read #2.

I willingly listened to your side of the story. I don't think you're lying, but I think you simply thought you returned something at a certain time when you did not. Your only human, life goes on, and you're the only one who remembers.

"but I think you simply thought you returned something at a certain time when you did not"

But what _you think_ is incorrect. I specifically made a telephone call to my spouse after I dropped off the movies, to say that I had returned them on time. If it wasn't for that phone call, I would have assumed that I had made a mistake. So what if a person has a history of being late, I also had a history of paying the late fees without question. I have no clue why the employees checked in the movies late that day, I wasn't babysitting them.

And exactly how am I "reacting badly"? I have every right to be upset. I certainly am not having tantrums over this. Like the founder of this site, I had a problem and I an unhappy about that. And you are so quick to assume I made a mistake, but seem to not want to admit that the BB employees are the ones who made the mistake not me. I willing paid for my mistakes, I do not willingly pay when I have not made a mistake.

I have not once been rude to you or any of your co-workers on this forum. I have not named called or acted immaturely. I have calmly stated why I am a former customer and hate blockbuster. I never said I hated any person personally, I have a problem with the company and its policies, even if the policies are currently obsolete. Although I still believe given the chance BB would readily reinstate late fees if it were not for companies like Netflix. Even when complaining about the erroneous late charges I was polite to the BB employees, store assistant manager and store manager. Which is high as I escalated the problem because I was unaware until checking out these forums that I could have contacted corporate. I never saw a corporate customer service phone number in all the years I used BB. I not disputing if it existed or not, I just never saw it.

Still Eastside to us out here on the Westside;)

Congrats, RK.... tho, if you think about it, you are probably the one person involved that has the least to do with all of that;)

(Except in West Virginia, of course)

Although I still believe given the chance BB would readily reinstate late fees if it were not for companies like Netflix. You´ve refered to this a few times now as if reinstating late fees would be some kind of dishoinest buisness practice that BB would use to con money out of their customers. Is this honestly what you believe?

Late fees were never a way for the company to con money out opf their customers. Late fees were a valid way of recouping revenue lost after a person kept a film longer than they paid for, thereby preventing another customer from PAYING for that film. It seems like an incredibly simple fact to me, but then I come from a country where BB still cons late fees from their customers so what do I know?

The fact is that you can rest easy because BB could NEVER reinstate late fees now. Certain customers (the greater majority in fact) would kick up a whole lot of hell about how they should be entitled to keep a 2 night rental for 30 days and the damage it would inflict on the buisness would be even worse than the damage incurred by removing them in the first place!!!

Aww, congrats! Your poor sister... that is a huge baby. My sister just had her second kid about three weeks ago. Even though you (hopefully :( ) had very little to do with the baby, you have the best job: in a couple of years, you get to take the kid out, buy her a really loud toy, pump her full of sugar, and send her home to Mommy! You'll get lots of death threats, but it's totally worth it.

I know I already mentioned this to my sister. I can be the cool uncle who pampers her and never has to discipline her! :D

Not only are they fun, they are effective. The air conditioner at my store has an issue with "cooling," so I have resorted to using a couple of the flower fans at once. Very refreshing!

I was born weighing 13 lbs. 3 oz. My mother did *not* have a Caesarean.

You will hate them approximately 13 minutes after they hit the floor.

They're best at about 2-years-old. That's the Mini-Me stage. He'll copy ANYTHING you do.... or at least try.

I take great pleasure in showing my little nephew all kinds of new things that will drive his parents nuts;)

One of my friends taught his two-year old nephew to open presents, and then let him loose on Christmas with the whole family there. Patrick had a BLAST ripping open the presents, but Uncle neglected to tell him that not only were all the presents NOT for him but for his cousins. Mom got him back by letting her son loose on his meticulous DVD collection.
