I havent been on here in a good min. but IM BACK!
My store is closing down in about a week (aww shucks).
What happens to the customers if the movies are never brought back to us before we close down? They still have time because they rented the movie, and by the time it charges to them if they dont bring it back were are already gonna be shut down.
Will they be charged, or do their balances get erased since the store is closing down?

but what if they return the rentals after the store shut down, but to another store because they still have time to keep them out?

I'm not sure they do. Doesnt a store stop renting over 3 weeks prior to actual close date. then they are still there another week closing and cleaning up after.
So I beleive from my experience with a store I helped close. Our last day there was a day or so beyond the final chance someone could of returned something.

So what your saying is that if the customer rents the movie, and lets it sell to their account, but when the movie sells to the account, the store will be already shut down, that they will be happy with a free movie that they wont ever pay for because the movie that sold to their account will be banished when the store shuts down?

No you changed that to fit your meaning of an answer you were searching for it that I didnt fit into. That wasnt at all what I just wrote.
I get the feeling you may be trolling for something else here, but I'm not yet sure what that is.

So in other words, what would happen?

Alrighty......
All customers should be given a choice between two stores to have their accounts transferred to. If they don't choose, the default store is the one closest to their address.
If they don't return their movies to the closing store before all employees pull out, they should be able to return it to the sister store. If there are any issues, they can call the number at the top of the reciept.
If they don't return their movies to any store, the balance doesn't disappear, it goes to collections.
Any way you cut it, either BB gets it's movies/money, or the customer gets hit by collections.

When a store closes down, nobody cares. That's the truth of the matter.
(In other words, BB isn't going to pour money into CPA to get their rentals back. It's over, done with.)

Thats not really how it works. If BBV never gets paid neither does CPA, it behooves both to use CPA.
It works just like a collection agency does. They get paid a cut of what is collected. If they never collect they get zero. So it appeases their profit margins to attempt to collect as much as possible. It also appeases bbv to allow cpa to collect because the 50% is better than getting nothing.

Our store replaced an old express store, so it technically 'closed' down, and re-opened as a new store. However, due to computer support difficulties, all balances were erased (including ones that had been written-off). Another glitch, however, means that if we ever have to 'RESTORE' an account that has gone into a RESBAL state, if there was a old balance that was erased, it will re-appear when it is restored, along with the other amount owing. That's always good for a laugh.

It is possible to transfer all info to another store. In my region they found it was not worth it. There were alot of glitches with the system so they allowed the movies that weren't returned to just disappear from the books. Those that were returned to nearby stores would add them at inventory. I suppose it depends on where the region is, whether it is corporate or franchise, and if they have fixed the process in the two years since I quit.

Possibly. They weren't able (or couldn't be arsed) to transfer rentals booked out onto our 'new' store...
We lost everything like that. All customer history, comments and warnings. All that got transferred were the database details (name, address, etc).

What I'm interested in knowing -- and this thread reminded me of it, is how the system reconciles two accounts that have the same account number.
For example, when I got hired at BB, I was given an account number that wasn't the next one in sequence (this used to be possible by adding through the POS prompt, not the CSR menu). However, by the time I quit, the store was only a few thousand numbers off crossing my own. Now, I assume if my account were in the system, the auto number counter thing would just hop over my number since it was already assigned. However, I don't rent at the store I worked at (there are several closer ones), so my account has definitely dropped out of the local system by now.
So how does the account number assigner thing know not to assign my existing account number to a new account when it gets up to that number (it's probably close or even past it by now)?
Not really an important question, but it's nagged at me for a while, and if BB ends up doubly assigning my number, then some new customer's info that overwrites mine would technically be liable for my rentals.. Or maybe the other way around.

It would hop over your number, and even if it dropped off, it wouldn't have assigned it to anyone else. :)

You can still do this.
Go into Customer Maintenance and type "ADD _(5-digit-number)_" instead of just "ADD."
It'll be just like a regular New Customer, but their number will be the one you typed in.

We still re-use old customer accounts. I know you're not supposed to, but we'll look at some 2 or 3 digit number, find an account that's not been used anywhere for about 5 years, and just give them that. Meh...:)

That's how I think we used to do it, but I somehow I had the idea they took that feature out because of people making silly accounts like 22222222222. I guess they realized it was actually a useful feature though despite its drawbacks.
