I've been going to the brick and mortar BB for eons. No real problems. I am a Total Rewards customer, not that that means much to me since I'm such a low volume renter. Maybe 1 or 2 videos a month. That's how it's been for a long time. The crap Hollywood is putting out in general is weaksauce, so it's hard to find a decent movie all the time. I was scouring the store one night and couldn't find any new releases I either hadn't seen, or were worth renting.I eventually found one, but wasn't really happy. So, admittedly, I was in a bit of a mood.

Upon checking out at the register I was informed that my Total Rewards card was about to expire and did I want to renew it?

Me: How much does that cost?
BB: $9 (or something around that)
Me: No thanks, I don't see why I should pay you so I can rent from you.
BB: But you get free stuff!
Me: What free stuff?
BB: For every x number of movies you rent, you get a free one.
Me: If you mean those NON new release coupons, no thanks.
Me: Besides, if I pay you $9 for free stuff, it isn't free..right?

She didn't say anything more, and neither did I. No voices were raised and the transaction was completed.

I've been back once or twice in the months after this and they haven't brought it up. But they still let me rent videos. So, I guess I'm allowed to exist with a "super basic, no rewards, I'm on to you fuckers" account status. Which is pretty much what I was looking for.

End of story.

ps: Love the site.

Actually if you are a low renter , rewards is not for you. But many people benefit from it by upgrading there account to rewards. Don't be surprised if you are asked again. It's our job. Just say "No thank you it's not for me".
By the way, what's with the fuckers comment???

It seems to me that you're not understanding that the Rewards is an upgrade to your account. So you could have always rented without having the Rewards, you just don't get the extra benefits.

If you rent only a few times a year, then yeah, the Rewards isn't for you. But if you rent fairly frequently, and enjoy renting a (GASP!) older movie every once in a while, it's not a bad deal. If you use two free rentals in a year, you pretty much got your money's worth. Any more than that and you save.

We're not trying to rip you off - we want you to have the Rewards so you come in and rent more often, not so we can get $10 from you and hope we never see you again.

I agree with Zoo, the comment by OP was pretty stupid. Why be an ass?

If its not for you its not for you. No one really cares. All the poor low paid employees are doing is trying to save people money.

My vote is legit customer with an attitude problem or a new mole.

So when you had the rewards, you rented 1 or 2 movies a month, and now that you don't have it you rent a couple every few months... sounds like the rewards had its desired effect while you had it, to increase your visit frequency. It is a loyalty program, the fact that you think you are "on to us fuckers" just goes to show how not "on to us" you are.

Either way it was in jest.
So there is a basic, non rewards level card that doesn't have a yearly renewal fee?

The Blockbuster Rewards is not required to rent at blockbuster it is a enhancment that blockbuster provides its customers which is actually a really good deal.

Rewards membership costs 10. and change with tax
the benefits include
Mon-Wed for each paid rental you get a BSI movie for free
(BSI= Any movie in the middle section that is at least 1 year old)
For ever 5 movies you rent within the month you are in you get the 6th movie for free which may include new realese titles video games or BSI titles
This is only good 2 times in one month) and the finall benefit you get out of it is that each month you get a free BSI or as the coupon reads non-newrelaese rental. (this is also only usable for the movies that are 1 year or older.

The reason the Csr asked if you wanted to renew it was 1 your rewards was expiring and she was letting you know if you wanted to renew it which believe it or not allot of customers do as its a good benefit. and 2 Blockbuster is currently pushing the Rewards sales as its primary sales initative. each store is required to meet a certain rewards sales goal which includes renewals. the reason for this is not that blockbuster gets money from you for selling the rewards the rewards as the name states is a initative to reward members for renting at blockbuster video.
If you use 3 of the 12 Bsi coupons you get in the year that the rewards membership is good for you already got your moneys worth.

"I've been back once or twice in the months after this and they haven't brought it up. But they still let me rent videos. So, I guess I'm allowed to exist with a "super basic, no rewards, I'm on to you fuckers" account status. Which is pretty much what I was looking for. "

I don't know why you are so angry. from what you told me in your post she asked you to renew your rewards membership. if you where not sure what it was you could of simply asked her and she would of provided the details as she is required to do so. Questions you should ask if you are not sure

What is it?
Do i have to have it to rent?

Ask those 2 questions and you should alwasy be fine. no need to be angry for no reason its alway a matter of asking question asking for a phamphlet or simply reading the sign or fine print and if you don't feel like it ask a Shift leader or manager to give you the information on it. don't immidatly take a offensive position withou knowing the facts.

Hope it helps

Some really good points in here.

$9 for free stuff isn't really free.

And I don't think the guy was angry at all in his post above, but was just trying to be funny.... I laughed.

An interesting question comes out of this story. How many Blockbuster Rewards members actually get the $9 of value out of their membership?
Also, does anyone else think the reward system is a little too complicated?

Why not just make it once you rent 5 movies or games, you get 1 movie or game free? Seems simpler...

I'd guess at least 90% do. It only takes 3 free rentals to get your money's worth. At least half the people get one free movie when they first sign up. And assuming they come in another 3-4 times in the next 12 months, they've got enough opportunities to grab a couple free movies. Also, the majority of people who get the rewards cards are frequent renters (meaning we see them at least 2-3 times per month) who utilize the rent 5, get 1 free... these are the people who obviously benefit the most.

And as for your comment about just making it Rent 5, Get 1 free (no monthly restriction)... I agree with you on that one.

Just be clear to some of you, my comment that is attracting negative attention was indeed supposed to be in a funny tone. Sometimes it's hard to make something sound funny via text.

As to the rewards, I just don't think it is a reward when we have to pick from the middle section only. With the state of movie selections from that section, it's not much of a reward..imho.

I like to consider the "middle section" to be "bad movie backup". If you are renting on Monday through Wednesday, you can rent a classic you know is good to go along with the new one that might suck.

As far as the "it's not really free" statement before: Nothing in life is free, but it's hard to argue that the Rewards isn't a good INVESTMENT. Even my customers who rarely rent movies will at one point during the year get more rentals that the $10 bucks they put into it. The 5% that don't are the ones that have died before the membership was up.

If you don't want it just say no.... nobody is holding a fucking gun to your head. Shit.... nobody here really gives a shit if you get a rewards membership or not. It's there if you want it... and it benefits our regular customers.. if you don't need it just say nooooooooo. Simple.

We do have customers that come in the store several times a week... It saves them a great deal of money.

If you rent 5 movies a month you get a free rental... Good toward any other(NEW!, old, or game) rental. Every month.. and you can do this twice a month.

12 game rentals in one year = about $85.00

24 game rentals in one year = about $170.00

12 movie rentals in one year = about $55.00

24 movie rentals in one year = about $110.00

This is not even counting the free BSI(older) title rentals.

So, yeah the membership is not free... but, I ask you, who is getting screwed here? Fucking morons... If you don't rent many titles a month... don't fucking get rewards... why is this even a discussion?

PS: BSI has far more quality titles than the new release wall...(this is true in my store anyway.)

See, this is what kills me. I am so tired of people hating on the non-new releases.

First of all, everything becomes a non-new-release eventually, so that movie you want so very badly right now eventually will be there.

Secondly, the new release wall is full of crap. If you want "The Cradle" or "Who Made the Potato Salad?" it's on the wall. But movies like "Casablanca", "The Usual Suspects", "Swingers" and "Million Dollar Baby" are in the non-new release section.

Thirdly, everyone forgets that at Halloween, they come in for a movie from the horror section. In the summertime, people come in and want to see the original before they see the sequel. In the winter, they want to watch a Christmas classic. There are times when you will very likely want a non-new release. It may not be all the time, but it may be more than you think.

Fourthly, to the comment that someone made saying "Why don't you just make it Rent Five Get One Free and that's it?" So you're saying you want us to give you LESS and you'll be happy? Um.... then just consider those free rentals from the middle extras and if you don't use them, fine - you got the program you want. If you do use them, yay - you got something for free.

I'm sorry, but it just annoys me that people get so pissy about the Rewards. Seriously, it's complicated because it gives you a lot for free. If it was simple, it would suck.

Like I said previously, if you get two free rentals in an entire YEAR, you made your money back. Any more than that and you save.

I swear, I am going to change my sig to my personal motto with non-new releases: "If you haven't seen it, it's new to you."

Sorry, end rant.

I'm failing to see how the free rentals you get "aren't free". If you want to look at it that closely:

$10/ Rewards

$5/ Movie Rental

You get two free rentals, there you go, you just got your money back.

But apparently, everything you get after that still isn't free? News to me.

And yeah I've noticed the font before too. It's sort of taller, a bit of a stretched look. There's one speed sign that uses that font I pass on a (sort of major) street in my city, and I joke about how it's stolen from Oregon. I have two stores on opposite sides of town. One is in snootyville and the other in the poor mans land. I assure you, I would rather work in poor mans land. The rich come in and owe $2.00 and begin to sock it to me. The average joe just pays his $20.00 and happily goes on his way.

Whenever I get the end of transaction msg where it asks to renew and lets me know how many free movies have been had in the past year, I'll decide on whether or not to ask them to renew it - if they had Zero free movies, I usually just let it go, however, if they had....say....73 free movies in the past year, I definitely let them know. Had that happen a few weeks ago, one of my regular customers came in, picked up a couple of sodas and renewed her rewards (and she wasn't renting anything that day - just came in to renew)- of course, she had received over 50 free movies in the past year.
