Hey guys,
Question for you. If you accrue Paid Time Off, are they allowed to deny you the ability to take it? I just question it because I've heard people being forced to lose their PTO and have had a similar issue happen to me.
It is my understanding that we are entitled to the PTO as one of the benefits of our position, and I just don't understand how we can be told "Sorry, you have to lose it."

From what I understand, you can accrue up to a certain amount of PTO (I think somewhere between 30 and 60 days), after which you either have to take some vacation or lose the time.
This is to prevent people from taking four-month-long paid vacations.

If you dont take the time you will lose it. Also P11 and 12 have a lot of black out weeks meaning you must take your PTO b4 then.
They could technically deny it temporarily if say, you didn't ask 2 weeks in advance and they cant accommodate you. Or there is a serious shortage or someone already out the day or weekend you want. If you want P11 wk2 and the SM already has that week or say an ASM of course they can deny someone else that week.
They cant tell you though, sorry there are no weeks in p10 or p11 and p12 is blacked out so sorry you lose. If you run into that issues contact your HR manager immediately.

for store managers, we can use pto all through the year, just as long as we stay through the year. if we leave, we may face the penalty of having to pay it back. the other issue for SM's is just not being able to use it. Most SM's are allowed 5 days of carry over into the next fiscal year. but hourly associates, if they dont use it, they lose it.
Same thing goes with Holiday days. Like we get one day for each of the 3 major holiday's SM's work. but, if we work all 3, we have to use those 3 days in P1 of next year, or we lose them.
I have an asm, and 2 shift leads, and 1 csr that still get pto. i always remind them to use it, even if i am just adding it into a pay period. They've earned it, they might as well get to use it.
some sm's might try to skate their way out of it, because pto effects your compensation/fringe benefits line on the SPR....and thats BPM...which effects bonus.......but, thats wrong..so....dont do it.

DMs aren't required to okay vacations just because a SM has PTO on the books. If business needs require you to work, DMs have the authority to deny requested time off.
I'm really happy I'm a CA SM. PTO is rolled over. There is a cap, so if I'm not planning any vacations, I'll usually take an extra day off some week and use up 8 hours of PTO instead.

i do that too, just to make sure i dont lose it.
i didnt have that problem this year. i used 2 scheduled vacations, i had pneumonia, so theres another week and a few days. and totally unplanned mom surgery that went horribly wrong...so theres another week...needless to say i think i owe the company a day or two...but i'm not goin anywhere...

I made sure I took the bulk of my vacation time already, but I am poised to lose one week (not including the one week I am planning on rolling over) because my DM pretty much will not allow it due to coverage issues in my store.
I just feel like - in a scenario such as that, that they should allow you to carry over extra as in order to protect your business, you are losing your PTO.
I really wish I worked in CA, you have no idea! You guys seem to have SUCH a better deal there.

As an ASM I have used more than allowed PTO, they just took it out the next year. I always make sure I have used mine. It's an earned right.

yeah, i agree. if you've earned it, and you havent been able to use it, you should be able to carry it over.

It is just good common courtesy and the decent thing to do to allow it to rollover. If I had the authority, I would bend the letter of the law in favor of an employee who makes that sacrifice for the company.

Yeah when I left the company I had 330 hrs PTO. About a year before that, i had close to 400. A rep from payroll told me to start taking it. So late 2006 and early this year I took alot. My DL was cool, she let me take a week in December..

HR can let you roll over time at their discretion. I had time that I was about to lose when I put in my notice. I put in a two week notice, which would have made my last day the day that I was going to lose my time. However, they wanted me to stay three weeks until they could get another SM in there. I agreed on the condition that I wouldn't lose my PTO. They agreed and saved it.

2 years ago I had 20 PTO hours at the end of the year...no one explained to me anything about PTO so I didn't know I even had it - then the last week of the year, my SM told me that I had 20 hours that I was going to lose. I flipped out and couldn't understand why I couldn't just get those hours paid out to me. The company said that you had to use up all PTO by a certain date, which had already passed and that non-SM PTO does not carry over. We contacted HR and payroll and the both said there was nothing they could do. Now this year I have 80 hours to use still and I have no idea when I'll be able to take it, when is the last day to use PTO this year? I would like to just take the next 2 weeks off but my store doesn't have enough managers to cover for me.

sooo. since i just got my handy dandy benefits package info...i happen to have the breakdown for pto right in front of me....
either you are in cali-where the pto guidelines are different. or you were a vice president of the company...to have almost 400 hours of pto...thats 50 days worth of pto.....
just thought i'd point that out....

Plus, even CA PTO caps at a certain point. When I got up to 277 hours, my DL told me to take a vacation immediately because I would stop earning it shortly.
Recently I took a bunch of PTO in case I leave. One former SM I know had tons of PTO saved up, then quit and got taxed sooooo bad on the final payout. So that's a "bright idea" for any current PTO-holding employees. Use it before you lose it, or have to give 3/4 of it to Uncle Sam. :)

Somebody mentioned getting payed for PTO not taken. I like that idea. When I worked at, gag, McDonalds, you could either take the time or request it be back payed into your paycheck. Pretty sweet deal.

I don't understand.
She used your PTO for herself? Or she gave you a half hour of PTO without your consent?

You can't use someone else's PTO.
Didn't the company do a "donate your PTO" thing awhile back? For some natural disaster? That's probably really horrible that I can't remember what it was for, exactly. :(

That's what my initial thought was, but it seemed longer ago than that. I was a SM by the time Katrina happened, and my memory is of a PTO donation during my time as ASM. But this wouldn't be the first time my memory has failed me!

That's pretty sweet - most jobs I've worked just did that when you leave the company instead of letting you do it whenever you want.

that makes no sense there sweetie. she cant use your pto for her own personal use. pto owed and used is tied into your personal payroll id #. and adding in pto to save labor doesnt help either, unless she is using her own pto.....
so the only thing that would have been gained, is you getting an extra half hour of pay....so why are you bitching?
