View Full Version : Stopped Caring - Essay'ish Length

Maybe I'm just cynical but I actually stopped caring about arguing the restocking fees. There's too many customers that like to bitch and moan.
Also, from my experiences, the Blockbuster Employees are the scape goats for the theft and problems with people keeping movies too long (enough for a restocking fee or enough to own the actual movie/game).

At the moment I'm a SL, working 14 days in a row, with no break (which I'm going to make sure will not happen again if the pay isn't worth it) but towards the end of this stretch, I've stopped caring what the customer thinks or feels. The fact that they always come in with a bitchy attitude is not helping me resolve any situation and I'm more likely just to tell them to tell them there's nothing I can do.

Reading on these forums from the BM, I can sympathize with the problem he had, and yes, the employees do make mistakes ALL THE TIME. It's still no reason that the Employees should get chewed up(not talking about the BM), unless they are acting like assholes the whole time and not even trying to look at their history. If I nicely tell you, you haven't returned a movie, and you say you have, I go to the shelf and find it or don't, there's still no need to think I'm holding out on you. I will gladly check all the places that are known to me where it could be. In Mismatch, Perma-Sale, or the Wall. But if I don't find it, and your history is complete and utter shit, I'm not going to believe you. And I will NOT remove the balance. At that point you can get pissy, I'm still not going to let you rent. But if your history is mediocre, and your nice enough to know that I'm not just some servant sent to make your live perfect, I'll help you all I can. Chances are if your really nice about, even if I reject you from getting the balance removed and being rent able, there's still a chance of me going "Oh nevermind, don't worry about it." Don't think we stop paying attention or thinking about what we can do after you leave. If you leave all pissy and acting like an asshole, we aren't going to do dick all, and we will probably laugh when your gone. Just act civil and very respectable in this manner and 95% of the time (dependent on your history) we will take it off or try to work something out.

The employees, aside from being punching bags for the rotten customers, are also scapegoats when a shit load of theft happens. We get yelled at when we get stuff stolen from us, and no Blockbuster isn't going to do shit about it. I'm actually tempted just to sit and watch a shoplifter steal something, and then just as he walks out, say "Have a nice day." You might be helping Blockbuster when you stop a theft from happening, but they're not doing anything to help you in the future. So, why do more than you have to.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
So here's basically what I'm saying.

-If we can't find your movie on the shelf or you have a restocking fee, don't be an asshole and expect us to take it off, cause we probably won't. Act quiet, and respectable and work will get done to either take down the damage of the owned movie, or restocking fee.

-Employees are people too. You don't go up to the guy in a bus stop who's eating loudly and go "SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!" Don't think that the employee you are talking to is the one responsible for yours and only your problems. Chances are, it was someone else and there's more people besides you that are willing to be nice about it.

-Blockbuster isn't helping us with stopping theft but we are yelled at when shrink is happening. So if you're getting yelled at as an SM or ASM, just stop caring. The money you make from BB, is nothing compared to a career.

I know your venting over this but, it really isn't that hard of a job. It's retail, get out of it .

Paying for school man lol. Not much in the way of easy jobs around where I am. Basically all retail. I know I'm venting to the wrong crowd here I'm sure, as the people who read this are either BB employees or just people who had one or two late movies and hate BB for it.

I'm working for BB to help pay for school as well, and the job is really what you make it...since I was just promoted to SL I've had the most fun at work in a long time...you just need to take it in stride and try to stay in the Grey area between taking the job super seriously and not caring...you need to care enough to make it fun, is what I'm trying to say...

The customers will always be the way they are, you can't change that, you just can't let them get to you...I can't really offer any advice there...

And I know exactly what you mean with the whole shoplifting thing, last week on one of my shifts, there was a large amount of product stolen, and yes, I was the one ultimately responsible for that...but what I think really helped me deal with that was when my SM talked to me about that, she didn't tear me a new asshole, but instead took the position that this is just something we needed to work on recently (low-theft store)...It is very frustrating, but as a manager, you need to take responsibility and show leadership to the other employees if this happens again...

So basically, if you find some way to make it fun, as well as still care about the job, as shitty as BB is, it can still be very rewarding...

Hope that all made sense...:p

More than you'll ever know. Funny-ish story about theft at my store.

A guy comes in, not to stereo-type but the typical Canadian theif (don't wanna get racial) I see him come in and he goes right for the Blu-Ray, grabs a hand full and takes it to the end of an Isle where his hands can't be watched. And I'm just standing there doing returns while watching him. He's looking at me, right in the eyes. His girlfriend is usually there to TRY to distract me from watching him, but she was too far away to get my attention :D He's still watching me, I smile and wave at him from 20 feet away. He puts the movies down and walks out.

Now mind you that is his only warning from me, and probably knows it, seeing as I haven't seen him again since then.

Yeah, well said...:D

I was feeling that way when I went from working 7 days in a row getting trained for my promotion to SL, to working about 5 more days in a row because half the store was going on vacation...I know exactly how that goes...;)

You just sound overworked...like AD said, just take some time off, have a few beers and a few ladies...you'll feel much better about your situation...

Speaking from expereince, go find a local moving agent. They are always hiring, they love college students who work for the summer, it's really not that hard work, and the pay is usually pretty decent, better if you have a valid drivers license.

I stopped caring too; not about the customer, not about the employees, but Blockbuster as a company and their poor business decisions. Unfortunately those business decisions will inevitably affect the employees' jobs and customer loyalty.

My days are spent resolving issues of broken down equipment; trying to cover shifts and the rest of the time I'm at the register. The issue of covering shifts is not an anomaly within my store, but I get calls on a daily basis from stores in my district trying to cover CSR and manager shifts.

It never ceases to amaze me the wasteful habits of Blockbuster; from paper waste, to amrays thrown away. Recently we asked customers to donate movies purchased at Blockbuster and all the while, we destroy movies on a weekly basis. Instead of destroying them, donate them to charity.

But isnt it also then a waste of you since you stand around not doing your job and bitching about it the entire time there. The pot calling the kettle black failing to recognize it is the same material is a personal failure and quite possibly a personality flaw.

My guess is your DM then is on a 30 day action plan which will soon eliminate him from employment. A good DM will not only nuture and develop his people but will also eliminate the scourge that brings morale down. Its obvious which you are and hopefully your new DM once the current is canned will make haste and eliminate you like she would her bowels. Showing up for shifts doesnt make you a good employee, energy, drive, ambition and positive attitude do.

That's because your DM is desperated, doesn't want to go through the trouble to hire a replacement. And no matter how you say it, with your attitude toward the company , you cannot be an effective worker. SO hows the job hunting going? I see you haven't found another yet. Must be the attitude.

My replacement is being externally promoted from another store and need only be familiarized with this particular store, current staff, their personalities, who the best sellers are their weaknesses and strengths, Taleo, scheduling, the daily functions performed by the store manager, doing the wall and who to call when equipment is not working; which should take up a fair amount of the day.

Besides, being an SM with Blockbuster is not rocket science, there is nothing difficult about it.

Correct, I have utter disdain for Blockbuster, the fact it is neither employee or customer friendly, nothing works properly, etc. Now why would you assume that what I post on this forum is how I am while at work? I would think any manager knows how to conduct themselves professionally while on the clock and that entails the ability to always be positive and motivate their staff.

That would be as bad as having a discussion, whining and complaining that customers say the darndest things while on the clock. Hopefully managers and staff who are employed in retail aren't guilty of that major faux pas and hopefully don't show their utter disdain for customers. Now that would be foolish; it's not rocket science; you accept a job in retail you have constant contact with customers. That is an undisputable fact; whereas my disdain comes from the fact what I have encountered is something one would not know until AFTER working at a company.

Consider it whining all you want. I'm not reactive, I'm proactive; it didn't take me long to realize Blockbuster is in a world of hurt; much worse than I imagined prior to accepting the position. That is why I will start a new job the beginning of September with a company that is actually quite competitive in retail and not in the experimental stage.

Yes, we KNOW about the financial state of the company we work for. Its been pretty static for the last three years. Yes, we KNOW about the outdated equipment but since it still works well enough for the stores to run then we just get on with it. That they are actually most likely on a final warning and are about to be pushed out of the company. There is no OTHER job, there is impending termination thus all the sour grapes and nasty talk.

And someone on this board mentioned how they pity me? You guys are laughable. You go to work, come home and log onto a message board called "I Hate Blockbuster" and have mundane conversations to each other and you get your panties in a wad when someone says Blockbuster sucks as an employer; but then post on the thread "Customer says the darndest things." You can't change them, so deal with it.

And someone referred to it as networking? I call it being a lemming and being in a perpetual state of denial.

Who are you to even care what we think or what we do?

We think and do and post whatever we like and you can suck it up and like it and say thankyou afterwards or you can fuck off and never come back (my favourite) or you can go on as you are now under the delusion that any of your posts could ever change anything about how we think/post/act. I have a feeling youll choose the last, so good luck with that

Oh look, heres some of youre old posts...

dec 6 2007...Also, I've read stock prices are down. Does the future of Blockbuster look bleak?

So it seems that you knew about BB being in trouble BEFORE you even took the job which means you LIED in the other thread when you said you were unaware of it.

OK, one more question. My current job the stress level on a scale from 1-10 is definitely a 10+, what would the typical stress level be working for Blockbuster.

So it seems your fabulous perfect previous job that you were raving about in comparison to BB was actually so stressful that you had to quit.

jan 17 2008I was a member of another "work related" message board for a few years. This is definitely a refreshing change. The other board was filled with narrow-minded, negative, whiners who incessantly complained about everything under the sun...

Hmmmm, you could have been talking about your future self.

Your job and your happiness are what you make it. I've met all the SM's in my district and they all are happy. It may have to do with our DM, he's a great guy. Believe me, there are worse places to work.

Whats that you said?? Your job and your happiness are what YOU make it. What great advice. I have say, I much prefer the old version of you.

I did change it, I've quit Blockbuster. Yes, my previous job prior to BB was extremely stressful, for reasons you haven't the foggiest idea. I knew going into BB that the future did not look good; now that I'm there, it has been confirmed 10 fold.

I'm a realist, instead of remaining in a dead end job where I'm basically a glorified cashier, I decided to be proactive and seek employment elsewhere. I've put far too much time, effort and education in my career to waste my talent being a cashier.

You all seem to be so interested in whatever I post. Yeah, I got punked. I'll be working at a job making a better income where I can actually be a manager and not worry if the company is going to be around in the future. I appreciate all the attention I have received from all the lemmings on this board.

Good luck to all of you.

What?? Where on earth did you get this made up description of a lemming?

A Lemming is a small rodent, not a person, they are not suicidal, they are not intent on courses of actions that will lead to the destruction of them all.

Using the term lemming as in the slang for a suicidal person/group is acceptable (albeit a myth) but then attempting to actually providal a factual quote that is in fact totally untrue is just stupid.

It's meant as a metaphor. Do you know what a metaphor is? One does not go to any dictionary when defining a word used as a metaphor.

To actually go so far as to dissect the intending meaning, when most actually know the derivative of the metaphoric usage of the word lemming. Albeit the usage was taken out of context from a Disney movie depicting lemmings committing mass suicide; when in reality they do not; it does not change the historical meaning of the metaphorical usage of lemming and has stuck in the vocabulary of the English language.

......which has been proven by how many responses there have been by the lemm......I mean members of this forum.

Evidenced in that context of fallacy, but certainly not proved. In fact, your theory would suggest a climate of few responses, not many, because after a single reply to you the rest of us would agree with the exact wording of what was posted, in full lemming characteristic. Truly we are all so unlemminglike that everyone needs to get a post in to ensure his particularly distinct opinion on the matter is properly aired.

In any case you seem to regard us all in very low esteem. Frankly when I find myself in company so described, I make my leave in the simple interest of finding more engaging people. Yet you linger still among those you look down upon-- looks like a classic case of social ineptitude.

Yeah mang, I never got that. I understand hanging around for maybe a day, making your grandstand and what have you, but people who stay around after they have decided they are better than everyone there just don't make sense.

If people had bashed me mercilessly here for no reason, I probably would have left. And if I had thought the people here weren't worth my time, the same.

This is a dictionary style definition, see how you used the word "noun" and described the pronunciation followed by the meaning of the word (incorrect meaning but thats not the point).

To actually go so far as to dissect the intending meaning, when most actually know the derivative of the metaphoric usage of the word lemming.

This sentence doesn't actually end but I know what you meant, my point is you are the one who dissected the word first, I merely corrected you, with cute pictures to help! :p

It's meant as a metaphor. Do you know what a metaphor is? One does not go to any dictionary when defining a word used as a metaphor.

So you post a dictionary definition, your first post as seen above, and then after being caught out/proved wrong you claim that you would not go to a dictionary for this......hmm so you managed to contradict yourself on the same page of the thread!

As I said before there was no problem with you using the term lemmings as a metaphor, but you then chose to include a incorrect description of the word. Had you said "you are all lemmings" then that would be fine as it is your opinion, but you chose to be pedantic and attempt to make yourself look clever which went sadly wrong.
