View Full Version : Blockbuster Sucks!

I stopped renting movies from Blockbuster years ago because they tried to cheat me by accusing me of not returning and paying late fees. (I {or anyone in my home}did not rent the movies.) They sent the account to collections. Shortly after fighting with the collection company, convincing them it truly wasn't my charges, Blockbuster was involved in a class action suit for 'improper charge late fees' to their customers. I, for some unknown reason, thought I would give them another chance! How stupid of me!!! Here we go with movies I didn't rent. Only now they say the case was returned without the DVD & I owe $60.00! They will have to whistle for this one too!!! I will NEVER go back to Blockbuster and will make it a personal mission to tell everyone I know or speak to how big of a RIP OFF the are!

Hi Xmember,
Can you clarify something quickly-- in the second part of your post, you imply that you had a problem involving movies you didn't rent (see that part I quoted). If you didn't rent the movies, what did you mean by giving Blockbuster another chance?

Though it's likely you will never come back, I still am curious, did this happen at the same store as the original issue? Might just be a shitty staff. Blockbuster, like all other retail outlets, has good and bad stores.

What I want to know is - how the hell can he owe $60?
As far as Im aware, the US system gives customers a 21 day grace period at no charge, then the customer is sold the film to his account and its his to keep. He writes that its only 1 dvd of a film, (not a boxset or game) that he is being charged for so why tf would he be charged $60 for 1 dvd?

Honestly, If I wasn't employed by Blockbuster.. I wouldn't rent from us either. Pushy program sales, high prices, anicent POS systems with limited Movie/Game search options. New Releases are never in stock unless you come on Tuesday. Games Rush is a joke. We lack in Quality BSI titles(in my store anyway). We seem to be in business to piss customers off by changing our Plans and Programs every other week. Must importantly I hate the place because of all the Total Access crap... we were threatened with.. only to make the service useless. Fuck us.

so.....you got charged for movies you didnt rent. and to follow rk's point see the highlighted sentance above.
and you state that the movies you didnt rent were returned missing the disc?
1st: we have an account specifically for instances just like this, stuff gets returned empty or with the wrong disc in it almost on a daily basis. the item gets checked in from the customer account and checked out to this special account. thus making it impossible for us to charge you for it.
2nd: providing YOU the customer, gives US the employee's your accurate address and phone numbers, you should have been given ample warning that these items were outstanding.
3rd: these practices i have just spoke of are audited on a weekly basis.
4th: if none of the above had occured, your store may have been a franchise store. and franchise stores can do whatever they want. they do not have to follow the same guidelines as us corporate stores. and if thats the case, i am sorry about your luck. Franchise stores only contract the rights to the blockbuster logo and parts of our distribution centers. other than that, they are locally owned and have thier own set of rules.
As a store manager i can only say how unfortuate your situation is, but, like someone else stated, it may just be your location. Not all of our stores run that way.

The Mismatch account was phased out in Canada, which is nice, we just put their account on hold and it stays checked out until the disc is returned (we call them once/week to remind them to bring the disc back). Cuts down on items shrinking out, and we get our product back way faster.

I am glad I am out of business now because no one would spend money to rent porn now when you can watch all you want when you want for free.

okay, I more than anyone can understand the frustration a customer feels when they think they are wronged. But not to sound too much like Judge Judy, "something doesn't ring right here, and if it doesnt sound right it aint true"
First, when a rental becomes late you get an automated phone message from BB saying the rental is late.
2nd , whenits auto sold, guess what? you get a second automated call from BB saying your account is charged and if returned within 30 days of selling price you are charged a restocking fee.
3rd, once the account goes unpaid, only then does a collection notice gets sent, and usually it says go to your store to take care of balance.
But in the same message you say the dvd case was empty and you were charged for the dvd. This is not accurate. If a dvd case (amaray) is returned empty, you never get charged, unless it was returned empty and it was already auto sold on account.
and remember this, no one at blockbuster is out to get any members! we like to keep our customers, and happy if possible. When a movie doesnt show up, we have no idea that it was mr. smith who rented it. unless of course you call us and want an explanation on your account.
And one more thing. These terms and conditions of your account , applies to employees too. infact we are scrutinized more than you. If a rental ever goes autosold on our employee account - we are gone- fired- see you later.
because our accounts are our resposability. Renting isnt a right - its a privledge.
No different than renting a book at the library. So please, you may be angry - but dont blame BB. if you taken care of this problem at the first call from BB. it may have been taken care of. way before it ever auto sold on your account.

I agree with you on this but I have two points for you
The phone may have a privacy feature on it, in which case the phone call won't go through
It's always our fault, no matter how right we are. If they dont get the phone call because of THEIR privacy block it is our fault. IF they change their phone number and don't tell us it is OUR fault.
Everyone is a victim now. How about if someone fucks up they admit it, we can fix the problem and move on. If the store is in the wrong they sohuld have to eat it. If the customer is wrong they should pay it. Period. End of story.

I would like to add that at my store we have had customers that have intentionally given us bogus phone numbers because they don't want those phone calls. Also, you forgot to mention that BBV sends out reminder postcards.

Perhaps its just me, but is bumping of posts really such an issue on this forum? Its just not active enough to be a big deal to me.
I just checked the employee board, the front page has 2 weeks worth of posts.
A bump would likely only move a post a few spots up the page anyway.
The only issue we've had with bumping is when some trolls decide to get necromantic and post in crap from years ago, which even then isn't a big deal, and only helps warn us about people we should probably ignore anyway.
Personally I think as long as we can try to keep certain mega-threads stickied (Customers/Employees say the Darndest) there really isn't enough posting to muck up the board.

You may be right, but since I joined here I have got to know alot of blockbuster staff and it seems to me that 90% of them are hard working honest people who dont make mistakes so I find it hard that so many people claim they did not rent the films that they are getting charged for ,it would be different it it was someone saying they were spoken to in a horrible way but its always the same story "I am getting charged for a film I did not rent " .So I put it to you that Blockbuster has many faults but wrongly renting films to other people accounts rarely happens .

nope, not so. the calls from the automated system don't come through as a private number. they come through as 000-000-0000. we have the privacy block on ours (well, had...took it off so my former boss didn't have to keep unblocking his number when he called to talk to CBW about the hit & run lawsuit), and the calls still came through. Since it doesn't show up as private number/private name, that little block doesn't work.

I'm confused about the OP's story as well. Did he: 1) get screwed over in the past, 2) :( stop going to Blockbuster, then 2 years later: 3) :) decide to give Blockbuster another chance, 4) but when he got there there was a balance already there for movies he didn't rent? ...if so, how did the movies get rented? By some strange coincidence (after all the time the customer wasn't renting), fraudulent rentals are occuring the moment the customer comes back to rent at Blockbuster. -oh, and fraudelent rentals where the covers are returned??

*Grins* read your Memebership form, in BOLD print it clearly states customers are responiable for any charges on their account, authorized or not :) Silly customers thinking they're smart.

Lady called today:
Lady: YOU CHARGED MY ACCOUNT FOR ALL THOSE MOVIES! I GOT OVERDRAFT FEES! I ONLY HAVE A FEW DOLLARS IN THERE!
Me: Ok....
Lady:...............well?
Me: ya?
Lady: TAKE THE CHARGE OFF!
Me: Cant till you return the movies.
*I get her name and pull up her account and she's had them past 37 days. THEY WERE ALL GREY'S ANATOMY WHICH CHARGE 49.99 EACH! SHE HAD 6!*
Me: OUCH
Lady: WHAT!?
Me: We couldnt do anything if we tried. You've had them too long. Good thing you paid for them.
Lady: I DIDNT PAY FOR ANYTHING! YOU CHARGED MY ACCOUNT WITHOUT ASKING!
Me: Well when we asked for the debit/credit card what did you expect it was for?
Lady: YOU DIDNT ASK PERMISSION!
Me: The day you signed your application you signed something saying we could charge you without prior notice. Also, you had your reciept telling you WHEN you would be charged. We are done with this conversation. My name is Jamie, store code *****. Customer service will know who I am. Have a good day.

BBV really is a rip off, constantly raising prices on rentals and then they raised the price of the Rewards $10 after being $9.95 for well over 10 years!
When they raised the prices of the games to $8.99 I was like "well this is the end, people are gonna stop renting games!" I don't know if the rentals went down or not, but I know people have gotten more and more pissed off!
I am so sick and tired of working there! I'm trying to hang on until May since I graduate from college in May! We'll see if I can physically make it until then! I've been working there for over 5 1/2 years! And to see how bad the company has gotten is what makes it so sad, I loved it there from 2003 until 2005, then when they got rid of late fees everything fell apart!

i completely disagree w/ the rise of price in the Rewards (as well as the removal of the gold rewards) membership. with no additional benefits, it seems like the additional $10 isn't worth it even to those customers who constantly rent in surplus amounts in certain anticipation of getting that 6th one free.
the increase in the game rental price, however, is reasonable. the biggest factor for it is because a large majority of game rentals come from Xbox 360. have you heard of the red rings of destruction? about 20-35% of Xbox 360 units are known to have a condition where the system becomes overheated, buffers the game discs at a resulting frame rate slower than the actual reader and burns destructive rings into the game. with that many defective games coming back for the 360, Blockbuster HAD to raise the price to cover for the loss. i'm surprised they just didn't raise it to 9.99, to be honest. PS3 games are rarely if not never an issue, while Wii games are commonly put in use by children -- so, adding that extra buck to all the New Gen games makes it easier to recover those losses.

Because of course you are perfect and could never have made a mistake!...
Also BBI absolutely never experiences simple human errors with returns and must be out to scam you for every single penny you have since they are evil!
Or maybe you returned the film late and won't own up since $6 is too much for you. I'm gonna go with that.
Pay your bills like everyone else and stop blaming other people for your screw ups! We admit it when we mess up, why can't you?
