View Full Version : Not too fond of Blockbuster

Okay so I do not completely HATE Blockbuster, because well I have never had a bad situation yet. However, I have barely worked there and already I am not fond of the low hours and the push for sales; so I have an interview at another video store. I am kind of worried though about the contract all employees must sign about confidentiality (in that an employee working at blockbuster is not allowed to work at any other competitor after a year of quitting or being fired from blockbuster).
All that being said; can anyone tell me out of experience or from stories about the consequences or if Blockbuster even enforces this?:D

sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
you werent told during your intial interview NOR the panel interview that we were big on sales? really? cuz thats like..um...what we do.
and what part of PART TIME did you not understand? part time is anywhere between zero to 32 hours a week. and i hate to say it, but its like that in any retail company.
you can go work for another video store. but it wont be the best. you wont get nearly the perks as we do. we are the only video store that offers tuition reimbursement, benefits for part time employees and a bonus program for hourly associates. so we ask you to sell a bit. hell i was at target today and the cashier asked me if i wanted to sign up for a credit card...
anyway, good luck. no one is going to hold you to the competitor thing. its for store managers and above. and since you havent been with the company very long you probably dont know enough for it to matter.

They can't enforce it.

They wont worry about enforcing the contract against you. But Sar is right... it's not any better anywhere else. That's just the sad facts of the times. Times are tough and only getting tougher. Blockbuster isn't the only company cutting hours left and right. When the business is slow, the first cut is always to labor.

Do not worry about working for another company. Odds are you work in a "right to work" state which makes it so you have the legal right to seek employement even if it is with the competition. It is more for copyright and information being taken and used at your next employer.

Ummmm, there are fewer "right-to Work" states than "at- Will"
however is it unlikely they would waste the time to come after you or your job for working at the competition. If you were in charge of trade secrets or R&D in some way, then you might worry, then again, if you worked in that kind of field, your well paid attourney would be answering this...

Well, sounds like you don't really want to work hard. And if you did sell more they would probably give you more houre...

No you don't ask us to sell a bit, you pretty much want us to take the cash out of customers pockets for them. You make us force customers into the rewards program. You threaten to fire us if we don't. I have my good days and I have my bad days. Now just because I had a couple of good days it's expected of me every day and if I don't do it I get threatened no matter how slow the store is. 2 weeks ago we got 89 rewards in one week, last week it dropped to 50 and this week we're at like 15. It doesn't matter if every customer that comes in now already has it we're expected to sell it. Give me a break. This is a second job for me and I've been in sales for 10 years. I'm good at it and I know what I'm doing. It's not my fault if we've pushed it so much that 98% of our customers already have it, yet I can get fired for it. Punish the employees that never ask, that never sell, don't punish the ones that work their asses off every shift but come up short from time to time.

wow...angry much?
you say "you" like i am the CEO of this company. and I as a store manager......don't force my employee's to do anything. they just do their jobs. So it sounds to me..that YOU have an issue with YOUR store manager.

Aim low, that's my motto. Never try, never fail!
Then you don't have the hassle of "high expectations" :D

I agree that, as you say, everyone should be held accountable, especially the ones that don't try. You are possibly being leaned on to compensate for them and that's wrong.

the employee-competitor agreement is indeed an enforceable contract, but it's not as if they'll bother at all. if, say, a top executive were to ditch Blockbuster to work for Netflix, the issuance would be obvious to both parties and probably worth enforcing.

Damn this girl is a tool...just go work for whoever you want...Blockbuster can't afford ANY lawsuit.
