Blockbuster & Dish

Here’s the new load down……

Of course you know Dish brought out Blockbuster in April 6, 2011. Michael Kelly is our new CEO (he came from DISH’s). He’s a strict guy and has been cutting a lot of unnecessary fat off Blockbuster. They started off with 1,500 stores but unfortunately they struck down to around 960 stores. They wanted to feel comfortable just like any business that’s smart would do, to close some stores down and gain some capital. We has Blockbuster have been just doing updates to accounts (emails, address, ect) to gain customer back to the stores by sending them free rentals and promotion. Blockbuster has been working on a new plan which is going to increase their lifetime. This plan would be the future, its coming out very soon (sooner than you think). You all have a good idea what it’s going to be like. I heard it’s going to be similar to GameStop store size. Not all stores will turn into this model until their store dies or just turns into unprofitable.

Blockbuster is going into another big change in again just like in 2008 when the company was starting to keep track of sales and only cares about sales. This change is selling Dish, of course you all know. Blockbuster is being dead serious about selling Dish now. They are pushing it big time. Every employee must be trained about selling DISH or you CAN NOT WORK A SHIFT until you finish the training. It takes about 4 hours to complete. Blockbuster is no longer the Blockbuster you once knew. So when you change jobs, you can put on your resume example:

2004-2010 -- Blockbuster Inc.
2011-20** -- Dish & Blockbuster LLC.

So yeah, when you talk to customer about Dish, you have to start up a conversation saying “Hey, so who is your TV service provider?”, “Hey, we can save you money on your TV service!”, “Blockbuster is part of the Dish family, we can save you money”.

You must say this to every customer that walks into that door. You have to make customers aware of Dish! You have to sale Dish too. It’s not only talking about it but getting Dish sales for the store. What is required out of employees now is estimate sheets and leads. You also have to follow up on the leads too. Dish made Blockbuster a goal of 10,000 sign ups by the end of the year. Blockbuster set stores goals. You have to get 2 sign ups a week!!!! Or at least get 1 a week. If your store goals without a sale within 3 weeks, they are going to start firing people. It doesn’t matter if you get a lot of Blue Tickets, kids passes, or bundles. You can those night and day but they’re going to ask you about “how many dish sales you get?” Now, Store managers won’t get a day off until they get a Dish sale. They are DEAD serious about selling Dish. They are sending out secret shoppers and Dm are visiting stores. They are going to expect you to up sell dish (not at the counters unless you are busy) but to get out on the floor to sell Dish. They are firing employees that refuse to sell dish or if they are caught not selling Dish it’s a write up and final notice.

Customers must beware of Dish network and you gotta sign them up. The best thing to sell Dish is you don’t have to tell them about everything. Only if they ask. You want to make this very very simple and clean. You don’t want to talk a lot. The most important thing is to get them on the phone with a dish rep to see what they qualified for. Also, look at the customer email account. If it has @comcast.net, then you know they have Comcast has tv/internet/possible phoneline too. Just upsale Dish TV only, not internet. Each sign up you get, you are award $50 on your next paycheck. You don’t have to wait months just to get it.
Now that you know about selling Dish, the store is still required to sell Blue tickets, kids passes, bundles and the promotional items

The list you have to know right now:

1. Dish
2. Blue ticket
3. Kids pass
4. Bundles ($2,$3,$4,$5)
5. Summer Combo ($1.99 moive + Coke = $1.50)
6. Another summer item (Coke + cheezets = $2)
7. Kids special 2 movies
8. Q3 updates now
9. Presale on Hunger Games
10. Lorax retail copys which are easy (DVD= $9.99, Bluray/dvd/digital copy = $14.99) Blockbuster is proving themselves they are worthy to university studio they are sellout their product fast and get in good graces with the studio.

So yup, What do you guys think? Did they improve Blockbuster or what?

This new Dish attentiveness is beyond unreasonable. We've been having to get on a conference call every day, mostly at 9am, sometimes at 9:45 or 12:30 on weekends. And all they say is the same stuff. She asks for our numbers one damn store at a time, chastises us no matter what, re-tells us our goals, reinforces that we can do this.

What we've been told is to approach a customer with "Have you heard about Blockbuster @ home?" Then tell them about us and Dish, and let them know we'll give them a free $1.99 rental if they'll let us ask them a few questions...i.e. what do they have for TV, how much do they pay, how many tv's do they have. All the while trying to fill out an est. sheet. We're supposed to be generating 15-25 leads a day, 1-3 est sheets per person, per shift. I dunno about elsewhere, but that's physically impossible in my store.

Most of us have lost all hope. We're all not only looking for employment elsewhere, but are willing to take pretty much anything we find. Anything to get out of this place. I'm not sure how many of us have said "I didn't even want to get out of bed to come to work today...I spent my entire day off dreading coming back here."

If they keep pushing the way they are, they'll be lucky to have any employees (or customers for that matter) at all come Halloween.

And I bet they still pay minimum wage or 5 cents more. I need to visit one and see how pushy the CSR and SL are towards the customer.

....Working for the big blue put horrible karma on me(For what I don't know I was one of the most laid back CSR's & got to know all the customer types). 3 months after quitting and starting my new job I was in a really bad car accident and then two months later I was in another severe accident. Now I deal with mental health problems and physical health problems.

What I miss is the people/friends I used to work with because we could make things fun but then once the ship started to sink it all went to hell. The DM's would put non experienced SM's into stores that were set up to fail from the beginning. I remember we had finally found our best SM then new DM starts, SM doesn't like what he sees him doing and is transferred for insubordination then he became an assistant manager far away from our district. I almost quit the same day that happened and it was a Tuesday I believe. Now thinking about it I don't think the Big Blue gave me bad karma. I think I was just at the wrong place at the wrong time twice.

Once again, are your stores given enough employees hours to cover the time it will take to sell a Dish package AND run a rental store?

Every retailer is now hiring for fourth quarter.

All of them.

GO.

It's a lot of pressure especially when they haven't given out raises. All it is incentives. They use to have dish people in our store but that didn't work out as they planned. Now the employees are the cheap labor but they get 1 Dish specialist which can only work 20 hours a week. You have to use him wisely.

“Consumers are spending an increasing amount of time using Netflix at the expense of traditional services like cable and satellite, which may lessen the incentive to retain a pay-TV subscription,” he said. http://blogs.barrons.com/techtraderd...d=yahoobarrons

I been hearing this a lot too . Customers are usin the Internet more than tv. People I heard use blockbuster, Netflix, Hulu and Internet source to satisfied their entertainment. This enconmey must suck if people don't have time to watch tv
