Update: #2
:eek:Landlord was just here showing someone the buliding.
Guess we didn't sell enough bundles or TA:confused::eek: Update...today the For Rent sign went up. Still no word from the DM or Corp that it's even happening. Assholes Oh and btw our store is one of the top 10 in the region right now. For real and the rent sign is up SO NOONE IS SAFE FROM CLOSURE |
where is your store? The state at least?

The landlord
The landlord had been telling the surrounding shops we are closing for 2 months...we kept blowing it off every time a customer asked (bc the other shops were kind enough to tell them)..now with the sign and him in and out of there showing the place it's going to be hard to avoid.
ANd, we had been told we'd be last on a closure list bc our rent was "cheap" compared to others. What a crappy way to find out..and 4 other surrounding stores are closing as well. I don't know folks, doesn't look good |
Just found out that the store closest to the one I worked at is getting the ax. Knowing how the stores in the immediate area perform, I'm really surprised that's the one that's closing. Further evidence that no one is safe if your lease isn't favorable.
I don't know how long the SM knew, but the employees just found out they're going to stop renting next week. What especially sucks is that my old SAM (who is a great person) just transferred there last month. My heart goes out to anyone who is getting displaced because of these closings, and I hope you all find something else quickly. And even if your store isn't on the current closing list, you still might want to take this as a sign of things to come. If you don't already have an exit strategy... this would be a good time to make one. |
How many stores are closing nation wide now?
it seems like many but I am sure its around 1,000. |
At one of my stores, i showed up one day and there was a "for lease" sign on the building. The DM was pissed and assured us we were not closing.. They eventually took the sign down. Then a few months later we closed....

time for the job hunt, sonny!

Does the sign actually say "For Rent" or "For Lease", or is it just an advertisement for the landlord's leasing company? Our landlord did the same thing a couple months ago, but what's really happening (or what we've been told is happening anyway) is the company is trying to get our lease down, and he put up a sign trying to get someone else who'll pay the current rate (we're a very profitable store but we post a net loss because of our lease). Last week we got the list of store closures and we're not on it. But it is a pain in the ass to have literally, and I mean literally, every other customer ask "so are you guys closing?" (my response: "yes, we close at 10").

I know of one store in my former-district that is now closing. It was a slow store on a busy street.

It COULD be nothing, though. It probably is something, but just maybe you might be ok. My store had a For Lease sign put in the window over a year ago by the landlord. I finally got tired of hearing customers ask when we're closing, so I took the sign down and hid it. No one's put another one back up since. I work at a franchise store and the owners continue to tell us that they aren't closing our store. I tend to believe them, as I've seen financial results for every store in my company recently and there are many stores hurting worse than we are.

I'm surprised I havent seen this addressed on the boards.
Your regional staff is currently in meetings [I beleive Dallas] flown in ,in 2 groups. One wednesday 1 thursday. This includes RDO, HRM, whats left of LPM's and many corp staff. They are determining or being told who is retained and who is terminated. Several higher ranking in the LPM and HRM are being axed. Firiday those retained will then be given instruction on store count size and restructuring and then be told to determine which DM's will be terminated. Next week begins that process. Its also been requested by your friendly neighborhood Hollywood video wrecking ball now the new BBV wrecking ball a list of all Store managers on finals and those who they feel are low performers. Good times. Additionally I've stated this before. Blockbuster can only get so small. As they shrink they become more at risk of losing revenue share deals as its no longer viable to the studios. With a low to no cash position a loss of revenue share means much smaller product buys and much less availability which equates to less sales. IE: the never ending downhill cycle. Companies like Computer city, circuit city fell in to this type of void and you even see it today in companys like radio shack with mainly outdated/old less relevant product. Will be interesting to hear how the rest of the month pans out. |
I thought you didn't work for BBV anymore?

A question to be asked will be if they will be keeping the DMs that everyone is complaining about. They are getting the results that corporate wants, right? |

He just always many of the bitching complaining employees [the bulk of here but not all] an avenue to pursue an agenda. The companies needs DM's regardless of all the nagging of those who feel they would run a store better. Ive seen districts poorly managed and those that run without DM direction. The ones w/o far and away perform poorly, lose even more money, are dirty, and have poor service. I've been told old corp boys neck may be on the chopping block this week also so time will tell. Everyone one of them is being evaluated by their superiors and it flip flops almost hourly at this point. |
its nature for bb to close down stores when they under perform or rent goes up. They should have made the higher up cuts a long time ago. They could have kept stores open longer. Put their salary towards that new high rent!
Sounds like BBVcasualposter making an educational guess. As the ship gets cut, blockbuster is trying to keep the best of the best employees around. It makes sense lol |

Sorry about that. It's kind of rare for me to squeeze in more than one reply in a week so haven't really learned the ins and outs.
