How should I approach this situation?
Hi I've been working at Blockbuster for the last year and while i started out mediocre I recently picked up my work effort considerably. For the past 4 months I have sold far more of the week's main sales push by a large margin over my co-workers (including managers). I also routinely cover other people's shifts and come in on my of days to help the MOD when it is too busy. I thought this would be a good time to ask about promotion oppurtunities and when I approached my SM he remarked that I was simply "not ready". After both times I did this he would write me up for a small matter but would still provide me with more hours than any other CSR. Eventually I thought I'd just wear him down but today i met our new SL trainee who has never worked at a Blockbuster or customer service jobs and my boss expects me to semi-train her into the position because I'm the "senior CSR". Should I confront my SM, or perhaps go to my DM, or should I pursue another avenue? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Put a paragraph break in there and maybe someone will be able to read it and give you an opinion.
You shouldn't have to train anyone, maybe show them the ropes, get their feet wet...... |

I would look for another job if you want to be promoted. Your SM isn't going to promote you.

Second, you can forget about the promotion, if they hired someone else, they obviously are not going to promote you. Third, it is not your job to traina SL. It's the manager and SAM. Fourth, if you aren't happy, then look for another job.

sometimes its just luck my store is the DTS and my SAM has only been with blockbuster for a year. So many people leave in and out she was quickly promoted and she could possibly make it to SM within another year.

Maybe you want to start covering shifts at different stores and maybe transfer to a different store but make sure your going to like the people you work with first. |

Transfer to another store, even if they're not looking for an SL right now,
You won't make any progress at your current store. If I couldn't transfer then I would probably quit w/out 2 weeks notice. I hate outside hires and from what your saying your SM doesn't respect your role in the store. Then again there could always be extenuating circumstances you're leaving out. |

Take it from someone who knows, you will not get promoted.
I'm not saying that I'm always right, what I am saying though is it sounds like your SM has already made up their mind about you, they either don't like your personality think you're immature, don't believe you're capable, or simply don't want you to move up, it happens. Whether or not you are worthy/capable is the smallest part of the equation, I have seen all level of management from SL's, to SAM's, to even DM's, that were either not good at what they did and got fired, or did dumb and crazy shit. My person experience with one store manager was that he always gave me the feeling that "he" would never have even hired me given the choice (I was there before he was), let alone have me as an SL, infact I heard from some other managers in the district that I was on a "chopping block" type list by the DM because of how he made me sound to him, I believe that in many ways that has damaged my DM's perspective of me, and I am permnently flagged as unpromotable. and that can happen. the point is, like me, you need to get the fuck out, even though it may piss you off, and you may very well be capable enough, it will never happen for you. |
