If I have a customer who is up for expiration and I see they got enough free rentals last year to make it worth it I will ask them if they want to renew. Otherwise, no...I am with you on this.

I think that they need to get rid of the DM position and leave it up to the SM.
Our previous DM got fired and one of the reasons he got fired was because he was basically letting the store managers do their own thing. It wasn't bad, either. Our SM has been with the company for more than 20 years or so and he may not be the easiest person to work with but I do have to say he knows our store and the area we are in and how to position things that sell in our store. He set up the store how he wanted to when that previous DM was in charge and we did fantastic in sales on all counts. We were in the top 5 in the entire company for quite a while.

Then that DM got fired, the new DM and RDO came into the store and made our SM change everything back to how corporate wanted it, the sales on those things plummeted and the new DM was riding our SM's ass for letting his sales go down.

I've often said and heard it said if corporate would just leave the stores alone when they are doing well this company would be doing great. They need to focus on the under performing stores and look at the performing stores and look at what actually WORKS. Not taping coupons, not balloons, not any of that crap...what actually WORKS. Instead they try to make a store in the midwest look like a store in California but what works for lay out in one part of the country may not work at another store in the midwest.

Our SM, by the way, re-positioned the favorites so it ran along with the lay out of the wall and put the PRP tables right smack dab in the center of the store. We also had a couple tables full of candy to promote the bundles. We sold a ton load of PRP and bundles, crap that is is nearly pure profit for the store. Since changing it to how corporate wanted, we've never approached those sales numbers again.

Heres some good sales advice. We got a pretty good thing going for bundles. We have a bunch of coupons that say movie night for 2 . daily rentals, 2 sodas, 2 boxes of candy and 2 bags of popcorn just $12. so you get two bundles out of it, it can take you from getting 15 bundles on a Friday to 30 and from 5 to 10 on a regular day just gotta make sure to scan 3 items, hit total and scan scan the other 3 hit total. Bam 2 bundles in one. It works, you just have to get on the floor and pass them out to any groups of 2 or 3 customers. This is the only way we can hit our rediculous goal of 97

If I'm a normal person who watches the news and/or reads the paper, all the while hearing and reading about BBV's imminent bankruptcy, why would I invest any amount of money in a "loyalty" program that I might get a couple months out of at best? Before I quit, I gave a two weeks notice just like anyone else. 4 days before my scheduled last day ended up being the slowest night of the week. We'd seriously go, at least, an hour with an empty store. My sm calls to see where we are on bundle sales and I tell her we're just at 1. Her response was "I still expect you to give 100% up until the moment you turn in your keys. Otherwise, I'm going to make it like you never gave me a notice." That night, I had my usual perfect close, counted all the money, set the alarm, and dropped my keys in the night drop after locking the door. I felt like this huge heavy burden was gone and I could finally allow myself to enjoy life.

"I'm going to say you never gave me notice" uhh, not.

I'd be on the phone with WORD and HR so fast to make that SM lose her job Sorry to all the SMs on here, but I was in management for awhile, and the way some of these fuck ups treat employees just because it's Blockbuster it's shocking to me Jim Keyes isn't a former CSR who won a lawsuit.

Man I wish I would have recorded some of the voicemails and conference calls we had when I was there! I never thought to do it ;[

Some great DM ideas:

-Taking down risers from PVD tables and making one huge "browsing" table for each promo priced movies. Making it much harder to find movies for customers, transfers, reprices, etc.

-Making our inComm fixture inaccessible/invisible from the queue line. If I only had a dollar for every time a customer has asked me since "Why don't you carry Xbox/PS3/Wii cards anymore?"

-Having CSRs walk around and ask customer's what their favorite candies and drinks are to get them to buy a bundle.

-Having CSRs push around the cart stocked with bundle items like a street vendor.

-Handing out "coupons" with fake barcodes on them. Customers weren't fooled.

This I did when the new quarter came around, made the barcodes WRN and the update notice, just so that everyone scanned them, they looked real, etc. It worked pretty well, though some people were like "Wtf? it's your same offer."

We've had the fake coupons around forever it seems. Quite often I see a customer pick one up and look at it in anticipation of getting a deal on something. In all of that time, I believe that maybe once I actually had a customer think it was a real coupon and bring it to the counter. The other 99.99999% I wind up picking up off of the floor.
