Dish Network to Keep 600 Blockbuster Stores

Dish Network to Keep 600 Blockbuster StoresBy Swanni

Washington, D.C. (April 18, 2011) -- Dish Network plans to keep 600 Blockbuster stores open after its reorganization of the struggling, one-time video rental giant.

That's according to an article by The Dallas Morning News.

The newspaper reports that Dish, which bought Blockbuster this month in a bankruptcy auction, has filed papers with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New York saying it will keep the stores in business.

Blockbuster reportedly now has around 2,000 stores open, but it was expected that a new owner would close at least some of them. Some bankruptcy bidders, in fact, had planned to close all the stores and sell the company's remaining assets in liquidating sales.

However, Dish said at the time of purchase that it wanted to use Blockbuster's retail outlets to help sell subscriptions to its pay TV service. The satcaster is also expected to use Blockbuster's online video streaming service to compete with Netflix's streaming business.

It's unclear this morning which 600 Blockbuster stores will stay in business

Wait, so are they closing 1,100 stores and keeping ONLY 600 open, or are they keeping open 600 that were closing?

Wow, that's an average of 12 per state.

I'm guessing store closing criteria are:

- BB's store proximity to current Dish Network outlet
- BB's store current traffic.
- BB's store current lease

Can't say I'm surprised; something needed to be done to get out of the red and this is a step in the right direction

I think there will be expansion in the online, digital & VOD arenas but in order to do that they first have to shorten the wounded limb that has been bleeding red ink b4 it infects the entire body!

Click the links to documents of "rejections of unexpired leases," then search the PDFs for your store code. Hopefully you are not on one of these lists!

I guess that guy who told 482 they wanted more stores was full of shit.
