Capitalism of today is not the same as it was then. The world has changed, and definitely not all for the good.

Up until then each store had to buy copies of movies at around $68 each. They said they were here to supply the indies and that they would never do business with Blockbuster or large chains. Many signed up. I was going to but didn't because of the way I was set up I didn't need 50 copies of a title, I had title breadth as opposed to copy depth and customers came to me for a great movie, it did not have to be the latest new release.

Yeah, hard to believe ... but that was in the days when all of my staff loved movies and could fill your arms with great titles. And of course the free popcorn and toys for the kiddos flowed.

Anyway, I digress. << nudges Ozzie to awaken him >>

Lots of stores and chains signed up, Rentrak had all of their financial info ... what rented, which stores were the most profitable, who had the best locations, what titles to put where and so on.

Rentrak then began talks with Blockbuster and gave them access to the rental information on the indies. Blockbuster signed with Rentrak and began opening stores across the street, next door, in the same plaza as the best performing Rentrak customers. They offered movies at cheaper rental prices and used other tactics which eventually caused the indies and small chains to go out of business.

Once the other video stores were closed Blockbuster increased their prices and the customers boo hooed that they missed the indies. Not to mention missing the porn the indies rented, too.

At one point there were hundreds of stores closing each month and it changed the face of the video industry. It went from Mom and Pop to just a few major players. Many of my friends and family members lost their businesses and some even their homes. Lives were destroyed.

And then, in true karma fashion, Blockbuster signed deals to revenue share directly with the studios, leaving Rentrak out in the cold. OOPS!

And that, my dear friends, is why Ozzie and I hate Blockbuster.
When did this take place? 80's 90's?

It feels like a retread of the robber-baron capitalism, and a continuation of crony capitalism. I hate the idea of putting a cap on someone's ability to earn money and profit, but the rampant (mindless) greed that's taken hold is out of control and hurting the nation as a whole. Even so, I think those college kids and old hippies (many of whom are getting paid) protesting on Wall Street are idealistic idiots.
